I found the following information in regards to Coat of Arms
not only interesting, but educational.
(Notes from genealogy class - Rudisill [genealogy] Library)
Haroldry & Coat of Arms
Know: Individuals were granted Coats of Arms for services rendered.
The person who granted the Coat of Arms was usually a ruler or king
or someone in authority.
COATS OF ARMS WERE GRANTED TO INDIVIDUALSNOT FAMILIES.
Look for Coat of Arms given to an individual ancestor. Not everyone was
given one. U.S. people think that because someone with the same last
name had a Coat of Arms then that's the Coat of Arms for that family.
NOT CORRECT. A son, a brother, or his son, or father could have a
different Coat of Arms than his father, brother, or son. Have to prove
back to your person to see if they actually did have a Coat of Arms.
It's not going to be anyone in the U.S. unless related to Royal Family,
or someone like that.
