Thom:
By the way, it is nice that someone has answered my listing -- hopefully some
kind of connection can be made. The following is a write-up that I received
from one of the Cameron/Havener relatives. The two families below are joined
as you read in the write up.
In the 1850s, two families, that of Lewis Cameron, born 24 MAR 1824 in
Lawrence County Indiana and that of Aaron Jacobs, born 1827 in Brown County
Ohio, moved to Union Township Effingham County Illinois. Lewis Cameron and
Aaron Jacobs were neighboring farmers and they both enlisted in Company C of
the 98th Illinois Volunteers at Mason, 9 AUG 1862 and served during the Civil
War.
Lewis Cameron, the son of Edward Cameron and Betsy Beasley, emigrated from
Lawrence County Indiana with his wife Martha Ellen, born 29 MAR 1827 Orange
County, Indiana, daughter of Alexander and Nancy (Laurence) McCullough and
their four children. His brother-in-law, Alexander McCullough, Jr., his
family, his sister-in-law, Nancy Jane Kellar and her children, and his
widowed mother-in-law also came with them.
Aaron Jacobs, son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Butt) Jacobs, emigrated from Brown
County Ohio with his wife Rebecca H. (Lucas), born 1832 in Indiana, his
parents, and several brothers.
Civil War records described Lewis Cameron as being 6'1" in height and having
black hair and brown eyes and Aaron Jacobs as being 5'6" in height and having
brown hair and blue eyes. Both men became sick while in the military and
received disability pensions after their discharge in 1865.
Lewis Cameron suffered from camp diarrhea which became chronic and typhoid
fever. Aaron Jacobs was extremely ill. He suffered with diarrhea and dropsy
that resulted in his death 19 MAR 1866, eight months after his discharge,
leaving his wife and only child Sophia Elizabeth Jacobs, born 23 SEP 1855 in
Effingham County Illinois. He is buried in Bethsaida Cemetery near his
parents. A Civil War marker identifies his grave.
Martha Ellen Cameron died in Feb 1866, four of her eight children having
preceded her in death. The children who died in childhood were:
