Alistair,
I have hit a BRICK wall with my Cameron's and I am looking at everything.
The reason for the question on Hugh Cameron is this:
My last documented Cameron is Jesse Cameron bn. abt. 1800 is SC (I have
Jesse's Siblings too). Jesse and most of his siblings lived in Marion Co.,
MS from 1828 till death. I suspect that Jesse's father is Levander Cameron
and I know that the mother's first name is Hester (no maiden name on her).
One of Jesse's brother's lived in Perry Co., MS (right next to Marion),
William Cameron and his Wife Jane Dearman Cameron. In the 1850 and 1860
census of Perry Co., MS Elizabeth Cameron, head of household, is living right
next door to William and his family.
Elizabeth Cameron (Cameron is her
married name), age 40 from South Carolina. She appears as Head of Household
in the 1850 Perry County, Mississippi Census. Listed with her are:
Abijah/Alijah age 22 born in MS, a farmer,
Sarah age 18, born in MS,
Franklin age 13, born in MS,
Erasmus age 7 born in MS.
In the 1860 Perry County, MS she is still listed as Head of Household age 55
from South Carolina. The only other person listed with her at this time is a
Bigsy, male, with a ditto under the name of Cameron, the age is hard to read
but it is either 30 or 36, he is a farmer born in Mississippi.
Elizabeth stays living next to William until his death and then she lives
with William's widow. Because of this, I believe that this Elizabeth Cameron
was sister-in-law to all these Cameron siblings and another male sibling
Cameron that I have no info on. According to these census, Elizabeth would
have been born between 1805-1810
The reason for the Hugh Cameron Question is back in 1829 and 1830, Jesse
Cameron is paying taxes on some land in Marion Co., MS and paying taxes on
some land right next to Jesse is a Hugh Cameron. This is the only time that
Hugh Cameron is ever found in Marion Co. Jesse and this Hugh are the only
Cameron's on these tax list. I find a Hugh Cameron in Warren Co., Census of
1830 & 1840 but no more after that. I am trying to see if these two Hugh
Cameron's could be the same. Since I have hit a brick wall on my other
Documented Cameron's, I am hoping maybe through finding who Elizabeth
Cameron's spouse was that I might be able to find that missing piece to help
me confirm who Jesse Cameron's parents are.
Jesse's mother Hester shows up in the 1830 Marion Co., MS census as head of
household with a few minor children and is living next door to Jesse and his
family. Hester doesn't show up again. But in the 1840 Perry Co., MS census,
another of Jesse's brothers Alexander Cameron, has listed living with him a
female between 60-70 years of age, which I feel certain this is Hester.
After the 1840 census, no female of that age range shows up, so she probably
died between 1840 & 1850.
I have searched everywhere both on the net and have traveled to these
different counties in MS, plus other counties there, looking for records,
but have come up with nothing. I do know that Jesse Cameron names one of his
sons Levander and in Marion Co., South Carolina in the 1800-1810 census there
is a Levander Cameron. I have also found 3 other documents on this Levander
Cameron in SC, 1798 and 1799 he is witness to some land deed sales for the
Ford family and in 1813 he is paying taxes on land there. Then I find a Levi
Cameron there on the 1820 census, after that, nothing. None of these
documents list his wife or any children, so these documents hasn't helped me
confirm that he is the father.
Sorry for being so long, but maybe something in this will look familiar to
someone on the list.
Thanks,
Lorna
