I have been looking for ANY record of ancestor Dougald Cameron, born in 1830 somewhere in
Canada, who married Catherine McCormick, had two boys in Canada, John and Edward, then
moved to Eau Claire Wisconsin about 1861. I spent a few hours at the library today.
There were no good matches in indexes of Central Canada, but there was a mention in Nova
Scotia, which I'll share with you. Perhaps it's familiar to someone:
"Just at the opening of the 19th century two brothers, Roderick Cameron and John
Cameron, came from Marven, Scotland, and settled down at Upper River Inhabitants, side by
side. Each of them took up 200 acres of good land. They were rugged men of fine
physique.
Roderick was married coming here and had a large family, namely: John, Angus, Donald,
Lillie, Ann, Jessie and Mary.
John Cameron (Og) had the following family: John, Roderick, Dougald, Hugh, Abraham, and
two other sons whose names we failed to discover. A daughter, Lillie, married Allan
Cameron (Red John) of River Inhabitants."
It goes on to describe the issue of John, grandson of John Og. This is from History of
Inverness County, Nova Scotia, by J.L. MacDougall, published in belleville Ontario in
1972.
I've looked up River Inhabitants. It is a place at the very south tip of Cape Breton,
a large island which is the north part of Nova Scotia. Does anyone know what Og means?
Guess what? I really don't think he's my guy, but this is all I have so far. Maybe
he's yours?
