Hi Ian, just read your post to the Cameron list. Do you know if William had a
middle name? Is Perthshire, Luncharty, Scotland near the same place this John
and Margaret came from? There is a church that starts with an "R"..possibly in
Perthshire..maybe Red_____ or something like that. At any rate, there are some
records there of Camerons being baptized, married, etc. in the Church records.
Maybe your William and his family are there..I remember hearing of a John and
Margaret Cameron from those records.
One reason I ask about a middle name is that my family came from Perthshire in
1881 to America..and I am told that my gg-grandfather was Duncan
Cameron..however, his son was then named William Duncan..and I have been
unable to find records in Illinois for just Duncan Cameron. In addition,
Duncan's brother came here with him, and his name was WPK Cameron (William
Patrick Keir Cameron) as best we can figure out. I believe that the KEIR in
his name is the maiden name of his mother, Margaret Keir. I don't know what
our family did while in Scotland..but when they got here, along with thousands
of other immigrants from Scotland, they took whatever job was offered and it
was usually coal mining. They were literally worked to death and often cheated
in their wages as they did not know how to count American money and were paid
by the weight of the coal they dug each day. Often times, they were told that
they dug much less in weight than they actually did, and were paid far below
what they actually earned. Many died in the mines..too many. I don't know if
any of this will be helpful to you, but I hope so. Thank you for posting and
please do so again. Have a good week. Sunny
