Message Board Post:
I am interested in a man and several women named 'Cameron' who were
supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie's uprising in 1745. They are as
follows:
ALEXANDER CAMERON: born circa 1727, a labourer, from Inverness-shire.
ANNE CAMERON: born c.1716.
EFFY CAMERON: born circa 1718
FLORA CAMERON: born circa 1706.
Alexander was in Cameron of Lochiel's regiment, and was taken
prisoner at Carlisle. It is probably that the three women were also
captured there, and marched as prisoners to York Castle in early
1746. The women were from Lochaber [Inverness-shire] and their
occupation is given as 'spinner and knitter'.
All four were among 150 Jacobites transported to the Americas the
following year. But the ship, the 'Veteran', was captured by a
French privateer, or man-o-war, and the prisoners were all taken to
Martinique. What happened to them next? Are you a relative? I'd
love to hear from you!
