Hi Susan, I don't have any information on John Cameron, but I can
tell you about my Cameron ancestors who have connections with
Lochalsh, Lochcarron, Fortingall, Kilmallie and Glenshieldaig.
Samuel Cameron (b. 1779 Fortingall), father Allan Cameron, mother
Christian Kennedy, 2 brothers Alexander and Donald, sister Florence.
Samuel married Janet McGregor (b. 1792 Kilmallie) and they had 9
children between 1814 and 1832 in Glenshieldaig and Lochalsh. Samuel
died in Sallachy in 1867.
His son Allan, my GGG-grandfather had 10 children in Killillan
(Kintail), Lochalsh, Applecross, Bracadale (Isle of Skye). Allan's
eldest daughter then moved to Lochcarron where she married and had
children.
It seems to me that they were moving wherever the work took them as
shepherds, and there always seemed to be other Camerons where ever
they went, even though it wasn't traditional Cameron country. I don't
think it was a coincidence, and they were probably related somehow,
but it must be very frustrating that John Cameron died 2 years before
the first census. Have you tried looking for the Estate Papers for
the areas John lived in Inverness Library? They kept records on
tenants, you may get lucky.
Good luck.
PS, I also have Mclennan, Mackenzie, Mackay, Macrae, McDonald ancestors.
