H. W. CAMERON PASSED AWAY LAST EVENING
Well Known Optometist Was Former Member of City Council and School Board

Hugh William Cameron, for over half a century, one of the leading
optometist of Halifax,
a former representative of Ward Two in the City Council and Chairman of
the Board of
School Commissioners, passed away at his residence, 111 South Park
street, last evening
following three weeks illness.
Born at Hardwood Hill, Pictou county, seventy-one years ago, Mr. Cameron
was the
son of the late Daniel Cameron and Catherine McDermot, and was the last
member of
his family.
He came to Halifax over fifty years ago and entered the practice of
optometry in which
he was engaged up until the time of his recent illness.
Always active in civic matters, Mr. Cameron was a member of the City
Council for two terms,
representing Ward Two. He was some ten years ago appointed one of the
city's representative
on the School Board and before retiring from office was elected chairman
of that body.
Mr. Cameron was a past president and active member of the North British
Society and of the
St. Andrew's Lodge, A.M. & F.M. He was a valued member of the
congregation and an
Elder of St. Matthew's church.
He is survived, besides his wife, by two sons, Dr. Ross Cameron, of
Hagerstown, Md., and
Donald, an engineer at Wabana and two daughters, Mrs. Victor Mader and
Miss Marion.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.
