Hi Margaret,
According to John Stewarts's "History of the Cameron Clan", Sir Ewen had
three wives: his first wife Mary died in 1657 and they had no children.
He married his second wife Isobel in 1662 and they had three sons and
four daughters. They were John (who became XVIIIth chief), Donald,
Allan, Margaret, Anne, Catherine and Janet. His third wife was Jean
Barclay and they had two sons and seven daughters: James, Ludovick,
Christian, Jean, Isobel, Lucia, Ket, Una and Marjory. Sir Ewen was
considered to be one of the greatest highland chiefs of all time.
Hope this helps - Good luck in your searches!

Subject: [CAMERON] CAMERON 18th century: Alvie & Lochiel, INV
Hello:
As a new lister, I should post my interests and see if anyone else has
any
connections. I only just this week discovered Camerons in two lines on
my
father's Aberdeen/Banff/Inverness side of the family tree, both of them
"joining the family" in the 18th century in Inverness-shire.
1. Alvie, INV, line: starts with my 4xgt-grandmother Christian CAMERON,
b.
1 May 1743, daughter of Murdoch CAMERON and Janet SHAW. (Christian
married
Alexander KENNEDY 20 June 1763 in Alvie). Murdoch CAMERON was born 1720
in
Alvie, son of Murdoch CAMERON and Margaret McLEAN, who were married 18
Feb
1717 in Alvie. That's all I've got so far -- can anyone help me find the
marriage date of the younger Murdoch and Janet Shaw, or a birthdate or
parents' names for the older Murdoch?
2. Lochiel, INV, line: This was originally researched by my
gt-gt-grandfather, a history professor at Aberdeen University. His
handwritten notes were supplied to me recently by my grandfather's
sister
in New Zealand, who somehow ended up inheriting his papers but has done
nothing with them. The Camerons join this line in my Shaw ancestry with
my
5xgt-grandmother Jean CAMERON (who married Lachlan McPHERSON 2 Jan 1704
in
Lochiel), b. 1682 or 1684 in Lochiel, daughter of Ewen CAMERON and Jean
BARCLAY, who had been married in Dec 1681 (in Edinburgh?). Ewen was born
in
1649 in Lochiel and was the son of Ewen CAMERON and Isabel McLEAN.
At this point my gt-gt-grandfather evidently became skeptical and
started
putting in lots of question marks and "possibly" notes. Can anyone tell
me
if the historically well-known Sir Ewen Cameron (1629-1719) and his wife
Isabel McLean, married 1645 in Duart, ARG, had a son Ewen born 1649? He
would have been the younger brother of John and thus uncle of the
also-famous Donald Cameron, "the gentle Lochiel" of BPC's staff? Or were
my
7xgt-grandparents an ordinary Ewen Cameron who married an ordinary
Isabel
McLean and just happened, by coincidence, to have the same names and
live
in the same location?
I don't go hunting avidly for famous ancestors, nor, frankly, am I a big
fan of BPC, so I won't be disappointed at all if my ancestors turn out
to
be an ordinary farm couple with the same names as a more famous couple.
I'd like to get them straight, though, before I start hunting down the
wrong path from that point back. My Scottish history books have been no
help, as they don't give siblings or wive's names in the better-known
line.
Anybody connected to either of these lines, or can give me a lead? I
share
my internet access account with my children and got it through their
school
-- it blocks online shopping, so I can't access pay-per-view sites like
Scotland's People (and I can't afford a second separate account just for
one hobby). My avenues of research are thus somewhat limited.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
