Hello, I signed up after my brother died. He was a member here. I was not sure
what to expect. I will attempt to continue what he was doing.
We are looking for the parents of George W. Cameron. The various census has
his birth state as Tennessee. From the census he was born about 1815. I do not
have a record of any siblings or his parents.
June 7, 1839, he was married to Sarah Jones in Livingston Co., Kentucky.
(daughter of Lewis Jones, Sr.of the same place) Her sister Mary married on
that same day to another Jones.
Sarah & George had a son in KY. Eli Cameron -born 1843.
In 1850 census George and Eli were found in Randolph County, Arkansas,. That
census showed a woman named Susan Cameron and a baby boy, Henry Heydon
Cameron, born in 1850 with him but Sarah Jones Cameron was not listed. We
assume Susan is a new wife and a new baby from her but we are not sure. There
is a lot of differences in the two women's ages so it cannot be the same
person.
If we could find a death certificate for Sarah in either KY or AR it might
help. We have the marriage certificate but all it shows is her parents. The
census before that time is not too helpful.
Son Eli was drafted/taken into the confederate army and then we found him in a
Union
prison in Illinois. We have his military papers. He is not listed on the
prison death lists but that was probably not very well kept. From that point
he never shows up again in any census that we can find.
Feb 20, 1870, Henry married an Eliza Jane Massey in Lawrence co., AR. They
went on to homestead in Madison County, Ark and then later moved on to Gowan,
Latimer Co., OK. either just before or just after statehood. They died a few
months apart in 1914 and were buried in the Gowan cemetery. Buried next to
each other and 2 sons, Levi and
William Rufus. Rufus also died in 1914 and Levi in 1916. Rufus taught school
in OK and Levi was said to have taught and preached. He supposedly was the
first white teacher/preacher in that area. Levi is my grandfather.
I know this is a long story but I was in hopes that some of the people, or
place names might 'ring a bell' with someone. Or someone could advise me on
how to find old George's parents in Tennessee.
Before my brother, Bill Cameron, died at 67 (we buried him Feb 15, 1999)
he assured me that we would find old George's family and that he and George
would be up there cheering us on. That is a fun and comforting thought.
Thank you for your patience. Hope someone out there can advise me on what to
do next.
