The instructions to the field men were: All dates and info are to be as of
June 1.
However some of these field men could not follow directions. You will find
babies shown who were born in July, when in fact they were not alive on June
1. A close check of the subject census may tell whether he followed
instructions, or did it his way.
If the census was done properly, the date the man called on the household
(and shows on the page) was for his record-keeping only. A person who died
after June 1 should show. A couple who got married after June 1 should
still be home with their parents.
These instructions to the census takers are easy to find. There are some
census years where this standard had not been set. Check for the year you
are concerned with.
