Not being an expert on the matter, I can tell you it was all due to the
Jacobite rebellion and happened in 1746. Many Scottish soldiers were
killed at the battle which took place in northern Scotland (the entire
battlefield is now, I'm told, a memorial). The English forbid the Scottish
to play bagpipes, wear kilts, among other things so many fled Scotland
rather than be subjected to English rule. An excellent web site is found at

Subject: [CAMERON-L] Battle of Colloden
Hi There,
A real big qwertyuiop of a Hello to each of you. I hope that
Thanksgiving was good for everyone.
I would like to hear more about the Battle of Colloden, where
was it's origin, what was it's cause, and what affects it had on people and
their possessions, and safety. For those of you who are like me, knowing
very
little about the subject, I think it would be interesting to learn
from
those
who can tell us.
Let's hear it,
Jackie McMinn
