Hello Everybody
Does anybody have any connections with the following family:
Hugh Cameron (1834 - 1915) went from Scotland to New Zealand and settled in Mataura. He married
Catherine Bain (daughter of Duncan Bain of Blueskin) in 1869 and they had four daughters and five sons.
The information I have is mainly from Hugh Camerons obituary and from a bit about Hugh Cameron in a book about Matuara.
The sons are George, Archibald, Ernest John (a Sergeant in WW1 serving in Egypt), James Alexander Menzies (a Lance Corporal in WW1 serving in Egypt) and Ewen Duncan Cameron (a Trooper in WW1 - 12th Regiment Otago serving in Egypt). I don't know who they married or if they married.
I don't know what the daughters first names were (except for one) but they married the following:
Mr O Hubener of Mataura, Mr W H P Fleming and Mr G H Lang of Gore. The fourth daughter was Catherine and she married Peter Amos (they are my great grandparents).
If anybody has any connection or knows anything about the above families I will be really pleased to hear from you.
Thanks very much.
Best wishes
Fiona

It's been great to see Dean Cameron following the promising trail of John J.
I keep hoping for a similar breakthrough. Let me share some recent possibilities. No perfect fits yet, unfortunately. I'm looking for earlier generations of a Cameron family in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The grave of my gg-grandfather, Dougald Cameron, says he was born in 1830, though the WI 1870 census says he was 37 that year and born in Canada. So from the census and other sources, I know that I'm looking for a Catholic born about 1830 in Canada, literate, well-off enough to buy his house in Eau Claire when he arrived about 1860, a worker on a log boom in 1870, married to Catherine McCormick born in New York state, which borders Ontario at Glengarry County. (No U.S. naturalization records on this family.)
One possibility revolves around a family from Glengarry County in Ontario (Canada West at that time): a Donald Cameron, b. 1830 (?), R.C., parents Archibald Cameron & Catherine MacLellan, married July 28, 1829 at St. Raphael's R.C. Church . There are other children with name unknown. Could the name have been recorded incorrectly? Could he have changed it slightly in Eau Claire to avoid confusion with other Camerons? Some of this family went to Eau Claire around 1860, and are buried in the same Catholic cemetery there as Dougald.
Yesterday I braved the ghastly heat wave and went to the library to check the un-indexed, first official census in Canada West, for Glengarry County. There are three townships: Lancaster, Charlottenburg and Lochiel. I had heard the area was full of Camerons, but it wasn't too bad. (We should just be grateful that our name isn't MacDonnell or MacDonald. There were thousands of them, so many with the predictable first names of Donald, Angus, Mary or Catherine!) Only about a quarter of all the Camerons, perhaps fewer, were Catholic, though I noticed the religions clustered, probably around church locations. In Lochiel Township I found my first Catholic Dougald/Dugald: a blacksmith, b. Canada West (living with his father Duncan, 60 yrs. old, born in Scotland). This Dugald is 25 in 1851, and there are a number of younger siblings on the farm: John, Duncan, Catherine and Mary. My Dougald, by the way, doesn't seem to show up in church or other records. But then he would likel!
y have married Catherine at her home in New York state. Their first two children were born in Canada.
I have read that these Scottish families tended to migrate west together with relatives, as they looked for new land and profitable work. Are any of these relatives? Is Dougald lurking around in there somewhere? Or am I just narrowing down the search, eliminating possbilities with the same name? Next step is to look in the census and church records of the townships of Quebec (Canada East), which border Glengarry.
I welcome your comments and advice! ( Friends and family don't quite understand why I'm doing this.)

Hi All,
I am new to this list. I have been reading with interest all the
queries, especially those concerning JOHN CAMERON.
I too have a John Cameron. I have just received a wonderful
clue concerning where he belongs in the clan.
Could someone please help me with some look ups. I believe
he was the son of Allen Cameron and Mary Stewart's youngest
son, James (b. 1786- d. 1863) and Morrison Cameron. I found this
in a wonderful booklet by John Burton Cameron. This was sent to
me by an internet friend. However, in the book by the Kelly's,
CAROLINA SCOTS, they do not give any information on James'
line.
What I am seeking is Proof (deed, will etc.) that states James was
Allen's son, and the same that John (2nd son of James) was indeed his son.
His wife's name and children's names are too close for this John not to be
my gg grand father.
Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you to Shanna Jones for helping me find the information on John J.
Cameron's family.
I have gone to our local FHC and have applied to have the St. Finnan's
records sent to me. They said that they should be here within the week.
I was pleased to find that they had an index to these records.
Shanna, are there any tricks to these records? I know that sometimes the
names get confusing.
Thanks again,
Dean Cameron
HI Folks,
I've been off the List for a year or more, and
was interested if anyone had any ties to TN or AL,
or back to SC.
I'm looking for my GGGrandomother's family,
she was married to Andrew McMinn, Mar 10, 1855,
in Madison County, AL, divorced abt 1859-60, and
came back to AL from TN, and died here.
Any help appreciated,
Jackie McMinn
Harvest, AL (Huntsville)
Just an FYI, In the data I received for the children of John Cameron and
Flory McDonald it also lists a Eoin (Ewen?) Cameron b. 1840 Apr. 3rd.
Maybe someone else is looking for him?
Thanks,
Dean
I was digging through some more of my old research notes this morning (5:00
a.m. boy am I sick).
Shanna Jones of the Glengarry site gave me the parents names of John Cameron
married to Flory McDonald as Donald Cameron married to Christina Cameron.
Back in Wadena,
John J.'s next door neighbor Daniel's parents were Alan Cameron and Christine
McDonald. Alan's parents were.........Donald Cameron and "Christine" Cameron.
If these are the same Donald and Christine, and my John is the son of John
and Flory, this would make John J. and his neighbor Daniel, 1st Cousins.
This is a theory that I had for some time but never could prove anything. I
am getting closer to calling this a match but I would still like to hear from
you all to keep me sane.
All of these folks were from con 4 Kenyon.
Happy day's,
Dean
Well, I received back some information re: William Cameron born to John and
Flory.
I am going to post the info and comparisons that I have, and ask you all to
give me your opinions as to if you think we can call it a match or not. Here
goes.............
I have two pieces of paper that states John J. Cameron born in 1844. (Intent
for citizenship with Homestead papers and emigration papers.) I have three
census's two would have you believe 1845 and one 1847 for his birthdate. His
daughters birth cert say's 5/1/1845.
John Cameron born to John Cameron and Flory McDonald was christened 5/25/1844
aged 3 weeks (I'll call this a match if we go by the 1844 date)
When John J. married Permelia Lyons in Greenbush, Mille Lacs in 1869, another
Cameron lived 3 doors down so to speak. Daniel Cameron b. Canada died in
1869 in Mille Lacs from Typhiod. He was 26 in Sept. 1869. John is listed as
25 in June of 1870. (this supports the 5/1/1845 birthdate).
John Cameron and Flory McDonald had a son Donald b. 5/30/1842 (I know Daniel
and Donald interchange) who is 2 years and 1 month older than their John.
When John J. Cameron moved to Wadena, he had a neighbor Daniel Cameron who is
NOT a brother. This Daniel was 2 years younger than my John. Daniel and his
parents Alan Cameron and Christine McDonald were from con 4 Kenyon (same as
John Cameron and Flory McDonald).
Now for William Cameron of Wadena. He homesteaded in Todd County about 15
miles away from John J. and Daniel. His parents are listed on his death cert
as John Cameron and Flory McDonald. His cert states he was 74 in 1907. (born
about 1833).
John Cameron and Flory McDonald were married 18 Sept. 1837. Their first
child was named William born 10 July 1838. (5 years would be a BIG mistake by
a records keeper).
I know that the records of the day were prone to many mistakes. But with
names like John and Daniel and William it could be coincidence.
Let me know your thoughts,
Dean

Hello Dean,
I am out here at least, and I have followed your stories on trying to find
your Cameron's. Very interesting and I am pulling for you that you will
break that brick wall. I know how it feels. My Cameron's seem to have just
appeared in Mississippi in 1828, said they where from SC/NC, but they must
have been invisible in the Carolina's! Keep up the good Work!
Lorna
O.K. Cameron's, I might have found the "chink" in John J. Cameron's armor.
Here is what I have, if any of you have materials to check for me I would be
very grateful.
I found another Cameron in Wadena, Co. MN.
William Cameron b. abt 1833 died 1907 in Wadena. His parents were John
Cameron and Flory (McDonald) Cameron.
These names rung a previous bell, In Glengarry Co. Kenyon con 4 John Cameron
and Flory McDonald Cameron had their son John christened on May 25th 1844.
He was listed as 3 weeks old (my John b. 5/1).
I only discounted this previous because on John and Millie's daughter Addie's
birth cert it lists John's b-day as 5/1/1845 not 44.
In checking several other records however, I find him stating he was born in
1844 (his declaration of intent to citizenship).
The other connection in this was John's direct next door neighbor in Wadena
Co. Daniel Cameron. He was the son of Allen Cameron and Christine McDonald
from Glengarry, Kenyon.
Now it is getting to close. I need to learn if John Cameron and Flory
McDonald in Glengarry had a son named "William" in 1833 (I do not have
William's parents location for sure).
If Flory McDonald and Christine McDonald were related that also would be
evidence. Or if John Cameron Sr. and Allen Cameron were related as well
(maybe both).
It would also help to learn if John Cameron and Flory were of Scottish origin
as stated on census info for John J. Cameron.
I really want to say that I'm getting close, but I have been here before. I
am however eager to hear your reply's.
Thanks,
Dean
