[CAMERON] Camerons in Quebec
by Ann Cameron & Martin Landmann
Please forgive my vagueness on geography on my posting the other day. The Vaudreuil, Quebec area I referred to near Glengarry Ontario, both of which had lots of Camerons, is on the west side of the Ottawa River. St. Polycarpe is a small town in the Vaudreuil/Soulanges area there.
This is what I found in the Toronto Reference Library the other day.
from Index 1851 Census St-Polycarpe, P. Q., compiled by Carol Lalonde Hamp: (Name-Age-Line-Page)
Cameron Alex 8-1-70
" Amy 8-10-68
Catherine 45-2-16
Catherine 6-48-69
Donald 10-50-69
Emelie 4-49-69
Hugh 36-46-69
John 1-2-70
Marguerite 67-38-62
Marguerite 32-14-72
Nally 58-50-59
The 1851 census is the first national census in Canada, i.e., Upper Canada (Ontario) and Lower Canada (Quebec).
Names may be put in the French form because the priest or census taker was French, but the person may have used Margaret, not Marguerite. Nally may be Lally.
