My George married in Kentucky in 1839, I don't suppose your James had a
brother named George?
My George was born in Tenn, acccording to the census, but he married in
Levingston, Ky in 1839 to Sarah Jones. They were there in 1840, but they
moved to Ark, randolph County after that.

Hi Leslie and thanks for posting to the list. Wondering if you know the names
of Duncan and Mary's children..birth dates maybe..or a ten year time frame
where the kids may have been born? Very interested in hearing more about your
Duncan..was that his only name or did he have a middle one that you know of?
Do you know where they were before New York? Do you know when he died or
where? Sorry to question you to death here, but anything you have, even if it
seems redundant, can sometimes spark a fire or rattle one of our
memories..please feel free to step right up and go for it. If I see your line
anywhere in my paper mountain, I'll keep your post and let you know. Thanks
again, Sunny
Hey Folks,
I would like to commend the members of our List
for the exceptionally good posts that are being made recently,
for we never know how much of a tidbit of a clue will help
someone else's research.
This is not to say that there have not been good posts
made in the past, quite the contrary, there have been, and as
we get busy into the New Year, I hope to see more.
Most especially, I want to encourage others to re-enter
some old posts, and remind us of them, and also for the newcomers
to not be bashful to add yours. We are here to help each other,
in any way we can.
Good Day,

Hi Jeanne..responding to your note on the list about George Cameron. My
grandfather was George John Cameron or John George Cameron..this has never
been correctly established as he used his name both ways. Cute huh? At any
rate, he was born in 1888 in Streator, Illinois, which at that time was Bruce
Township, LaSalle County. His parents, Duncan Cameron and Emeline Gay came
over here in 1881 through Ellis Island I'm told, but then when I see the dates
on the net about when Ellis Island opened, it doesn't exactly ring true
either. I think my grandfather was named John George possibly as a tribute to
his grandfather who would have been the John part, and George after Emeline's
father, George Gay. Haven't been able to find his father or mother after 1890
when she died..can't find her burial place, records on either of them. This
makes me think that Duncan was not the only name of his father..it may have
been a combination of William or John with the Duncan part. My family notes
just have him as Duncan..but if that is true, it was unusual as most people
had at least a first, middle and last name in those days. Duncan remarried
after Emeline died and had two sons, William Duncan and Donald Marshall. I
have no clue whatsoever where the names Donald and Marshall would have stemmed
from, but, that he named one son William Duncan has always been a
curiosity..and I wonder if Duncan was really William Duncan. Hard tracking
people when you don't know their real names. At the same time Duncan Cameron
came over here from Scotland, his brother did as well..W.P.K Cameron, which I
believe may be William Patrick (Keir..his mother's maiden name?) Cameron. Both
Duncan, his wife "Maggie" (Margaret) and WPK all hailed from Perthshire,
Luncharty, Scotland. I have the citizenship application for WPK which he filed
in Streator, Illinois but he didn't become a citizen until he was in Lehigh,
Oklahoma some years later. On one of the documents it says he seeks permission
from the Queen of Britain, and on the final paper it says he seeks permission
from Great Britain and Ireland. Maybe back in 1881 Ireland and Scotland were
one..or maybe he was living in Ireland at the time of his departure to the
USA, having been born in Scotland. Again, sketchy guessing at best but its all
I have to go on. Looking forward to hearing from you again when you arrive
back home. Best wishes, happy hunting and have a good week. Sunny
This sounds like my Cameron, maybe. I'm not at home now, so I can't give you
the details. I have a Catherine Cameron who married Amos Dunn, and came with
children from Pittsburgh to Mercer Co. in 1853. According to Ruth Giffin, an
authority in Aledo, Illinois, Mercer Co., there were Camerons there at the
time. I have wondered if Catherine is related to them. History of Mercer Co.
1882 has several Camerons--but I can't quite match George to any of them. A
John Cameron came to Ill. in 1850, with a brother and sister, and settled in
Mercer Co. If you can find a copy of the above book, check it out. If you
can't, let me know. I'll be home next week, and can give you the exact
information. It seems to me that if your Camerons settled in Mercer Co., and
my Catherine and her husband came there, and there were Camerons there at the
time there must be some connection. Jeanne (WJSpring(a)aol.com)

I am looking for ancestors of Allan Cameron chr at Urquhart,Inverness 3 Jan
1806.Born to Alexander Cameron/ Mary Mcdonald. Would also like to find a
marriage ,any other births to ,deathsand burial places for this couple.
Allan married Christian Cameron 26/12/1832 at Glen Urquhart. She was chr
3/9/1807 at Urquhart, daughter of William Cameron/Mary Mcdoanld (yes
another one!)Christian's parents were married in 1789 and other children
were Margaret,John,Anne,Malcolm,Margery,Duncan,Owen, and James.
Christian and Allan emigrated to Australia in 1853 and family tree from
then on is well documented.I am also interested in finding out more about
the 2 Mary Mcdonalds.
Can anyone assist?
Thanks, Glenda in N.Z.
Hi, I am searching for information on my Cameron ancestors from Scotland.
Allan (or Allen) Cameron died in New Zealand in 1910, and his death
certificate lists him as being 62 (ie. 1848 birth, in Inverness). He was
married in Scotland to Christina Kennedy. Allan's parents were John Cameron
and Catherine Duncan, who may have married in 1850 at St Cuthberts,
Edinburgh.
Anyone with information that may help, please contact me
This is Stacie again - I checked my mothers records and found book # 3 below
and can do lookups if everyone promises to be patient with me. I hit the
motherload on a different branch this week plus got tons of info in the mail
on another plus got a great clue on another. It's feast or famine and I am
feasting this year so far!!!!
I'll have to look up the name but there is another VERY GOOD source for
Cameron loyalists that Bob did not list below. I'll post it late tonight as I
must go now.

Thanx to Stacie for a quick reply and nice to see a bit of action on the
site.
I don't as yet have any firm corroberation but by golly,I hope this is
the link I've been looking for.
I have some book titles I'd like to run by you and the other listees in
regards to Camerons in southeast counties of Ontario Canada,
Book One: Title Guide of Local Histories for the Counties of
Glengary,Dundas,Stormont,Prescott and Area - Fraser Institute:Phone
1-800-665-3558 (I called last fall and they said,"we'll get back to you".)
Book Two:
The Camerons and Other Geneologies:The Family of John Cameron and Lady
Mary Cameron- Author;Duncan MacDonald,1990
ISBN 0-921133-33-2. I've tried thru my local bookstore and they tell me
its out of print and was only a limited run.
Book Three:
1001 Name Index of Descendents of John Cameron the Wise,
Fairfield,Summerstown,Ontario ,Glengarry County (c. 1985)
Author: Alex W. Fraser,R.R.#1 P.O. Lancaster ON.
This title was researched off CD-ROM at my local FHC today
What I have on my Grand father ,Arthur Joesph Cameron is that he was
born:Grenville Quebec in 1877 and died in Ottawa on Feb 7th,1951 his parents
were John Cameron and Elizabeth Campbell.
I am still awaitng further information on names and dates of their
forebearers. As I related before, this info came to me through recently found
cousins in the Ottawa and Sault Ste. Marie area, and they have assured me of
info which sounds much like the "John Cameron, The Wise" as related by
Stacy.
If anyone else out there can help fill in some blank spots,we'd sure
appreciate the assistance.

Dear Cuzzins: Did someone submit a msg. regarding a McARTHUR-CAMERON
marriage? Could have been a Alexander CAMERON/MacARTHUR and Nancy
McARTHUR/MacARTHUR. If so, please Email me at: Shirley:

Thank you - have a great week-end!
Stacie, regarding the Cameron's from Scotland, Perthshire in particular..I
have the following in my family.
George John Cameron (my grandfather) born 1/21/1888-Streator, Illinois,Lasalle
Co died 3/10/1968 in Compton, Orange Co. California. Notes say the following
of him: George John had a half-brother, Jimmy (James) and a half-sister, Sarah
McLaughlin. I do not know if McLaughlin was her married name, or maiden name.
My grandfather as first married to a Nettie Brigham, Coal County, Lehigh,
Oklahoma. He had to sons with Nettie Brigham, those being William Duncan
Cameron b 4/4/1911 d 12/11/1988, and Donald Marshall Cameron b 3/10/1916 d
4/23/1982 in Compton, California.
Another odd note says that the half sister to George John Cameron was Sarah
Gallagher, and that she played piano in the silent movies and had a daughter
named Doris Saxton. The half-brother, James (Jimmy) Cameron apparently worked
at the SanBernadino, California Police Dept and possibly committed suicide.
This is undocumented to date by myself.
Going back to George John Cameron's earlier family. He was the son of his
parents, Duncan Cameron and Emeline Gay. Was born in 1888 in Streator, Ilinois
and his mother, Emeline died in 1890 in childbirth. I don't know what became
of Duncan Cameron but think he possibly remarried. At any rate, my grandfather
at the age of two was taken to Lehigh, Oklahoma to live with his uncle..Duncan
Cameron's brother..W.P.K. Cameron. These two men at least arrived in the USA
through Ellis Island in 1881. WPK Cameron was born 5/3/1853 in Perthshire,
Luncarty, Scotland and I wonder if Duncan Cameron was born there also. I
know that Emeline Gay was already here and her father's name was George Gay.
Emeline was married to Duncan Cameron in Streator, Illinois on Christmas Day,
1886.
I have been told that Duncan Cameron's dad was a John Cameron and his mother
"Maggie", probably Margaret. I believe her maiden name may have been Keir or
Kier as I have always thought that the WPK Cameron initials were William
Patrick Keir Cameron..sometimes the mothers tagged their maiden names in their
son's names.
If you seen any connections here, please get in touch. Thanks for what you
shared as well, I will keep it close at hand. Thanks. Sunny
Bob, it's so nice to see a posting regarding what seems to be the same
Cameron's that I am researching. It seems that these Cameron's were Loyalists
that moved from the Schenectady area of New York for Ontario prior to the
American Revolution. I have some info and resources to which I can refer you.
This is a reprint of a post I made to the list 31Oct1998.
Please if anyone can add to this, e-mail me and the list to do so. (my e-mail
is msbisnath(a)aol.com)
Also, I ,of course, have additional information regarding my non-Cameron
ancestors mentioned herein. Email me if any of that info will help your
research or if you might have something to add. Hopefully this will be my
lucky day : ) !!!!

additional Cameron's:
Nancy (Anne) Cameron who married John Roy Cameron above.
Her siblings (one is her twin):
1. Donald Cameron who married Christy MacIntosh
2. James Cameron (1783 to 30MAY1859) who married in 1816 Elizabeth Summers
(1795 to 25SEP1870)
3. Margery (May) Cameron (twin of Nancy (Anne) Cameron Cameron) married in
1807 Ralph Westley (who was killed), then married 29MAR1812 or 1814 Philip or
Finley Munroe
Her Parents:
Alex Cameron d: 1796 married to Jean Grant b: 1724 Schenectady, New York d:
1809
This Alex Cameron is not a descendent of John "The Wise" Cameron. They are
referred to in the book Reid's The Loyalists in Ontario , pg 46
I also have the following two note: Alex Cameron of Lancaster and Lot 25/
Front Lancaster
Her Maternal Grandparents:
Duncan Grant married to Anne Cameron. With the following notes:
The above Anne Cameron is not of the same family of Cameron's as Alex, who
married her daughter Jean, or the same lineage as John Roy who married Jean's
daughter Anne (Nancy). The Grant's had two children, a boy Donald and a girl
Jean, who was born in Schenectady, NY.
Hope this info is helpful. Let me know : )

I am looking for a book, Valley of the Scots by Malcolm Fowler. Apparently he
has quite a bit of information about early Cameron settlers in North Carolina.
I would be very interested in purchasing a copy if anyone knows where I can
get one. Thanks, Mary Conley conlyn2(a)aol.com
