Surname: ARMOUR, CAMPBELL
-------------------------
Hi All, I was recently at a Scottish Games festival in NY with my husband
and he was looking for roots of his last name. We found out about the last
name but not anything else. We wrote to a number of people and got a response
from one woman Jean Armour in the UK whose husband was from Ayrshire.
She stated "The Armours were not a clan as such, but they were origionally
from Ayrshire. Many Armours were deported to the US and Australia for fighting
with the Campbells against the MacDonald's at Culloden. The Armour's are
entitled to wear the Campbell Tartan or the Burns Check -
and Campbell means wry- faced. The Armours do have a family coat of Arms,
Crest with a Latin inscription which translated means HONESTY IS THE SAFEST
HELMET. Robbie Burns married Jean Armour (she is probably the most famous
Armour - has anyone traced her roots to a clan association?) but the only
living direct descendent is a female:( she was from Mauchline in Ayrshire,
where there is an Armour family museum. Mostly the Armours were lowland
Scots, but they were a
battling lot - and from what I have managed to read about them , always
got mixed up
in a fight"
So this is what this woman says who did a ton of research (lucky for me).
I am looking to confirm these facts that the Armours were associated with
the Clan Campbell and wear the Campbell tartan.
Is there anyone out there that can help me? I would appreciate private
email replies as I check email frequently...thanks in advance for ANY light
anyone can shed on this mystery.
I figure Jean Armour was a pretty famous Scot (by association)...I would
have thought that someone would have had her whole genealogy mapped but
I'm finding that is not the case LOL!
