I'm searching for the ancestors of Edward Campbell, born 1757, supposedly in Scotland.
He married Mary McLellan, born about 1759, Isle of Islay. They had six children before
they emigrated to Charleston, South Carolina around 1788. They settled in Marion County,
South Carolina. Mary McLellan died around 1816 and Edward Campbell headed west with some
of his children and their spouses. He settled in the northwest region of Florida about 40
miles north of the old Spanish Fort in Pensacola, Florida a part of Escambia County.
I've been told that Edward Campbell is a very uncommon name for a Scottish Highlander
and that his parents may have traveled with the military. I have found a site which shows
a Lord Edward Campbell who was the third or fourth son of Archibald Campbell, the eighth
Earl of Argyll, born about 1597, who was beheaded in 1661 for his involvement in the Civil
War. His older brother, Archibald Campbell, the 9th Earl of Argyll, who was also beheaded
around!
1681. Lord Edward Campbell emigrated to Ireland to avoid the same fate as his father and
brother. One other son was named Neil Campbell, Lord of Armaddie, and he had a son named
Charles Campbell. Any information on these families would be greatly appreciate for the
Christian names, Edward, Charles, Neil are constantly repeated in my family line.
I'm trying to find links in Scotland or Ireland for my ancestor, Edward Campbell.
Thanks, Gloria Campbell Manna
