I'm new to the list. I am researching the family of Jenny L Campbell born about 1852
in Page County, Virginia
She was the daughter of Joseph Campbell and Catherine Dinges. In the 1850 and 1860 census
the children of this couple used the Dinges surname. In these census records, Catherine
Dinges is white and Joseph and the children are mulatto. Joseph and Catherine married
about 1872 and the children were using the Campbell surname in the 1870 census. In this
census Catherine and the oldest daughter are listed as white while Joseph and the rest of
the children are listed as mulatto.
The only child of this family that I can't account for in the 1880 census is Jenny.
I did find this person but there's no proof that this is my Jenny Campbell:
1880 Washington County, Virginia, Abington Township
Campbell, Jenny - female - black - 20 - born Va - servant
in the home of James Fields.
I find Jenny in the 1900 census back in Page County, Va.
1900 Page County, Virginia, Shenandoah Iron Works
139/140 Campbell, Jennie - head - Mar 1852 - white - single
5 children - 4 living
Theodore - black - son - Mar 1882 - 18
Martha - daughter - black - Aug 1891 - 8
Gretter - son - black - Mar 1884 - 6
Ford, James - black - boarder - Mar 1859 - 41
In this same house is
139/141 Ford, Martha - Head - black - Jan 1840 - 60 - Widow -
13 children - 4 living
Martin - son - black - Dec 1867 - 32 - day laborer
I am assuming (yes I know this is dangerous) that James is probably the father of her
children. I don't find her again. In fact, I don't find ANY of these people,
except her son Theodore in any later census records or any other records that I have
access to. I have looked in the census records under the names of Dinges, Campbell and
Ford.
Theodore is in the 1910 and 1920 Page County Virginia census and in the 1930 Hagerstown,
Maryland Census.
Does anyone have information about this family? Does anyone know who the 4th living child
in the 1880 census might have been? Does anyone know what happened to any of the members
of this family?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have information about Jenny's siblings and
her mother's family back to the immigrant ancestor prior to the Revolutionary War that
I would be willing to share.
