Hello all! After an absence of several years, I return to the Campbell
mailing list for another attempt at hooking up with distant cousins!
The "youngest" Campbell in our family history is Flora MacDonald Campbell,
who was born around 1836, supposedly in New York City. On September 28, 1854,
she married William Henry Chandler (1830-1863). After W.H. Chandler's
death, in about 1866, she remarried James King (about 1827-1881). She died July
9, 1888 and is buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery in Queens, NY.
Flora's parents were Coll Nicholas and Amelia Ann (nee ?) Campbell. In
various documents, Coll is alternately known as C.N., Colin N., Nicholas, Col.
N., and Cole N. He is listed as Coll Nicholas on his death certificate, as
Nicholas in the 1870 census. I have been unable to find him in any of the prior
NYC censuses, though I'm probably just not looking under the right name! ;]
At any rate, according to his death certificate, Coll Nicholas was born
around 1806 in North Carolina. He married Amelia Ann (about 1810-1848), whose
maiden name is not known to us, probably around 1830. Other children were
Fannie, Colin M., Margaret, Christopher F., Kate, and Charles Jura (1845-1897).
After Amelia's death, in about 1855, Coll N. remarried Sarah and started a
second family with her.
From various sources, mostly found in cemetery records and obituaries,
we
know that Coll N. had several brothers and sisters. All of these folks died
in
NYC and are buried in the Cypress Hills plot.
Margaret Euphemia Campbell (abt. 1799-1858), married Donald Campbell (abt.
1758-1825)... yes, he was 40 years older than she. According to her death
certificate, she was born in N.C.
Annabella F. Campbell (abt. 1807-1843), married Christopher Livings (abt.
1806-1841)
Charles G. Campbell (abt. 1810-1845)
Duncan P. Campbell (abt. 1812-1846)
Rosetta Campbell (?-?)
I think, based on information found in wills and obituaries, that Coll's
parents may have been Charles and Margaret, but I have been unable to verify
this.
Any help would be appreciated.
Good hunting, Susan Huff
