Good Luck!
Hello to the HUGUENOT, MOTT, (searching for de la MOTTE,) BREWTON,
FORD,
GRISHAM/GRESHAM, CALVIT, BUCKLES, BUCKHOLTS, MIDDLETON, WOODWARD lists and
Frost
PRIOLEAU,
(The main focus of the beginning of this email is the French Huguenot lineage
of the the de la MOTTE family as well as the possible connection to the
French Huguenot families of CALVIT/CALVET/CALVER and a FORD line that may be
from
FAURE/FOREE/FOORD/FORD, both out of Manakintown, VA, that married into the
MIDDLETON - BUCKLES/BUCKHOLTS - WOODWARD family group.)
I saw a post from the HUGUENOT list in 1999 and don't know if the email
address for Frost PRIOLEAU is still correct or not but sending to it as well
as the
Rootsweb lists mentioned above.
I have just found information this week that suggests I may be a 7th great
granddaughter of Mrs. Rebecca BREWTON MOTTE and I am looking to find more
regarding that. I remember, previously, having heard of Mrs. Rebecca BREWTON
MOTTE
but did not know of my possible descent from her at the time.
If anyone could assist me with knowing if the following information that I
have for descent from her daughter, Mary Martha? "Polly" MOTTE is correct or
not, I would be very grateful. If you will please take a look at the
following
post and contact me if you have any information regarding the validity of
this
information as well as regarding any corrections or additions that you might
have. In advance, I thank you.
My descent, as I understand it, would be, (if I have the information
correct,) from John Abraham de la MOTTE, born: Bet. 1665-1667 in France,
died:
August 07, 1711 in ?, (was he the immigrant from Holland to America and where
did
he die?,) (and is this John Abraham de la MOTTE the son of the ship's
(Captain)
Jacob de la MOTTE who in early September 1654 who was the Captain of a small
ship named, "SAINTE CATHERINE," brought the ship into the colony at New
Amsterdam Harbor, (controlled by the Dutch West Indies Company, (I believe
that this
is the port at Suriname,) with 23 Jewish passengers, (escaping from the
Portugese inquistion in Recife, Brazil,) entered the colony controlled by the
Dutch
West Indies Company. Captain Jacques de la MOTTE allowed the Jewish refugees
to board his ship without payment in advance.
And, again, wondering if it was this (Captain) Jacob de la MOTTE, (born
sometime before or about 1620-1630,) who was the father of John Abraham de la
MOTTE, born: Bet. 1665-1667 in France who married Sarah Mary HILL, born:
March
18, 1666/67 in ?, died: February 11, 1757, (parents: ? ?,) who were the
parents
of Jacob MOTTE, Sr., born: November 30, 1700 in ?, died: June 17, 1770 in
?, md: Elizabeth MARTIN, born: December 16, 1710 in ?, died: February 09,
1757 in ?,) and the wife of Jacob MOTTE, Sr. who was Rebecca BREWTON, born:
June 15, 1737 in Charleston, South Carolina, died: January 10, 1815 in
Charleston, South Carolina, md: 1758 in Charleston, South Carolina, (Rebecca
BREWTON
was the daughter of Mary GRIFFITH and Robert BREWTON,) and my descent is said
to have been through Rebecca BREWTON and Jacob MOTTE's daughter, Mary Martha?
"Polly" MOTTE, born: 1775 in Charleston, South Carolina, died: ?in ?, and
husband, Willis? John? MIDDLETON, born: Abt. 1760 prob. in South Carolina,
died:
1808 in Franklin County, Mississippi, through their daughter:
Mahal(i)a Mabel MIDDLETON, born: ? in poss. Natchez, Adams County,
Mississippi, died: June 1825 in Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi, who
married Abram
BUCKLES/aka Abraham BUCKHOLTS, Jr., born: 1778 in South Carolina, died:
November 1853 in Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi, (md: # 2 wife, Nancy
KILLIAN,
(widow of 1st husb., Abram/Abraham GALTNEY,) and Abram BUCKLES/Abraham
BUCKHOLTS, Sr., (Major in the Revolutionary War who immigrated in 1729 as a
baby
with his parents, Katrina ? and Jacobus "Jacob" BUCKHOLTS.))
Abram BUCKLES/aka Abraham BUCKHOLTS, Jr. was the son of Elizabeth WOODWARD
and (Major) Abraham BUCKHOLTS, Sr., (RS,) who immigrated as a baby in 1729
with
his parents, Katrina ?, and Jacobus "Jacob" BUCKHOLTS from Eastern Prussian
into Pennsylvania and then later into South Carolina where (Major) Abraham
BUCKHOLTS, Sr., (RS,) lived during the Revolutionary War and then afterward
moved
into Georgia briefly and then into Mississippi.
>From Mahal(i)a Mabel MIDDLETON and Abram BUCKLES/aka Abraham BUCKHOLTS, Jr.,
my descent continues from their daughter, Mary BUCKLES, born: Aft. 1800 in
Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi, died: Aft. 1825 in Mississippi, who
married
Henry FORD, born: Abt. 1790 in Natchez, Adams County, Missisippi, died:
1851 in Mississippi, (who was the son of John FORD and Elizabeth CALVIT whom
is
believed to have been the daughter of Mary DEAN, (who later md: 2nd husb.,
Daniel HIGDON, Sr.,) and her 1st husband, Anthony/Antoine
CALVIT/CALVET/CALVER/etc., himself a French Huguenot.) And from Mary BUCKLES
and Henry FORD my descent
continues through their daughter:
Elizabeth Ann FORD, born: 1821 poss. in Franklin County, Mississippi, died:
1851 in Jackson Parish, Louisiana, who married Jehu/John Madison
GRISHAM/GRESHAM, born: 1815 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, died: 1861 in
Jackson Parish,
Louisiana, (who was the son of Lucy POWELL and Barnett GRESHAM of Oglethorpe
County, Georgia,) and Elizabeth Ann FORD and Jehu/John Madison
GRISHAM/GRESHAM, (son of Lucy POWELL and Barnett GRESHAM out of Oglethorpe
County, Georgia,)
and Elizabeth Ann FORD and Jehu/John Madison GRESHAM were the parents of
daughter:
(So far, I have not yet uncovered the ancestry of the aforementioned husband
of Elizabeth CALVIT who was John FORD but I think that there is a great
possibility that he was of the French Huguenot family of
FAURE/FOREE/FOORD/FORD that
moved into Manakintown where the CALVIT family was. And the HIGDON family,
(that married into the CALVIT family of Mrs. Mary DEAN CALVIT HIGDON and 2nd
husband, Daniel HIGDON, Sr.,) also married into the HARRINGTON/HERRINGTON
family
that connects to the BUCKLES/aka BUCKHOLTS/FORD family group that also
married into the MAGEE family.)
Back to the daughter of Jehu/John Madison GRISHAM/GRESHAM and wife, Elizabeth
Ann FORD who was:
Frances Ann GRISHAM, born: December 25, 1839 in Franklin County,
Mississippi, died: December 18, 1917 in Winn Parish, Louisiana, md:
September 18, 1855
in Winn Parish, Louisiana, md: 1st husb: Lawrence M. HATTEN/HATTON, (CSA/died
POW,) born: Abt. 1833 in Covington County, Mississippi, died: 1865 at Camp
Chase, Ohio, (Union POW camp,) after being wounded and capture at Battle of
Nashville immediately after fighting in Battle of Franklin, both in TN,
(mother
Frances Lucretia "Patsy" LOTT and William HATTEN/HATTON, (Frances' parents
were
Absalom LOTT, (of JOYNER, HARRIS, LOTT families 1600s Isle of Wight Co., VA,
and Martha Jane Dorsey? LIGHTFOOT out of 1600s Virginia LIGHTFOOT-LEE
family,)
and William's parents were UNDERWOOD and HATTEN/HATTON, LEWIS, LAM(P)KIN,
COX, DEMOURVILLE family group that married into my PAYNE-JENNINGS family
group
out of 1600s Old Rappahannock Co., VA and my EARLE-HAL(E)S-BENNETT-ALLERTON
family group out of Northumberland/Westmoreland Co., VA.) After the death of
my
maternal 2nd great grandfather, Lawrence M. HATTEN, aka HATTON, (his family
descends from English immigrant, John HATTON, immigrated in 1609 to
Jamestown,
survived the 1622 massacre because on trip to England and is descended from
the
brother of (Sir) Christopher HATTON, close companion of Elizabeth I, (Queen
of
England,)) then Lawrence M. HATTEN's wife, Frances Ann GRISHAM, married 2nd
husband, Zachariah Taylor "Zachary/Zack" FAITH who became a stepfather to my
great grandfather, the natural son of Frances Ann GRISHAM and Lawrence M.
HATTEN
who was:
