Cousins--
After reading the two wills of Thomas Calvit at
Ancestry.com, I am a little
confused. (I know...this happens a lot, just be patient with me!)
The will dated 2 Oct 1818, a year before Thomas' marriage to Hulda,
bequeaths to "Mrs. Hulda Covington, annual sum of $200 until her youngest
child Elizabeth Covington shall arrive at six years old." The second will,
undated but obviously written after Thomas and Hulda married in 1819,
bequeaths several slaves to "daughter, Eliza Lueretta Calvit and her lawful
heirs."
My questions are...Could the Elizabeth Covington mentioned in the first will
be the same as the Eliza Lueretta/Elizabeth Lucretia Calvit mentioned in the
second? If so, then it would seem that Elizabeth is Thomas' daughter, but
she arrived sometime before the marriage...why else would Thomas provide for
her in his will? Or was she actually Covington's daughter and Thomas adopted
her? I don't have a birth date for Elizabeth. Does anyone? As I
said, I am confused! Help!!
