Hey Ya'll
There had to be a second wife in Joseph Calvit (b. c1745 d.1819) marriage. I was reading
James Calvit, his second son's Will and he left money for his Half-Brother, Thomas,
when he became of age. Thomas never made it of course. In my book it listed Thomas and
James as children of Joseph and Sidney Calvit but James and Thomas had different mothers.
The best I can figure out by the 1820 Jefferson Co., MS. Cenus is Thomas ( free white
male, 0-10, 1) and Martha (Patsy), (free white females, 10-16, 1), were living with
Sidney. John Calvit was living with his first four children and his first wife had all
ready died. James Calvit was living with his wife Rebecca and they had a son, it seems,
living with them. (free white males, 0-10, 1) He must have died because in his will he
didn't mention any children.
If John had four children, Eliza and Lucinda the oldest two, and they are listed as
between the ages of 10-16, then it seems strange that Joseph and Sidney would have a son,
Thomas, that young being a full brother to John who must have been at least 20 years his
senior. Meg Smeal in New Jersey got me to wondering about this, I believe you are right
Meg.
Does anybody have anything else on this? I never knew John and James were in Jefferson
Co. until I read this cenus and there wasn't but one Calvit left in Jefferson Co. in
1830, that was Sarah Calvit, widow of Samuel Calvit and daughter-in-law of the late Thomas
Calvit. Where did everybody go?
