Martha Calvit married Joshua G. Clarke of Mississippi However, I have that
she later married Elisha Jacobs in 1819. This appears in many rootsweb
pedigrees. i also looked up amite, miss. marriages, and i found an Elisha Jacobs
marrying a Martha Clarke in 1819. Does anyone know about this other
marriage or the parents of Martha Calvit?
thanks,

Long ago I spoke on the phone with a guy from MS who was hunting all over
for this Martha Clarke's gravesite - she is NOT the same Martha Clarke that
was married to Joshua Giles Clarke - Martha (Patsey) Calvit and Judge Joshua
Giles Clarke were married Nov 19 1807 and he died July 24 1828 in Port
Gibson MS - I think he may have drowned - somewhere I have the notice of his
death - that wouldn't jibe with your 1819 for this Martha Clarke- and I do know
there was another one with that spelling in MS at the time - I have no
record of my Martha's remarriage or even of her death but I'd love to find it out
- - at least one of her children went to New Orleans.
Her father wasJoseph Calvit and mother unknown - they were hugenots who were
born in manakintown VA and then moved to Franklin in western NC area and
signed the wautega petition (sp?) which was the foundation for Tennessee - they
then came down to MS where daughter married Joshua G Clarke who himself had
come from PA where he was born and educated - He was the first chancellor
(judge) of Mississippi (Clarke County is named for him) and signed whatever it
was that made MS a state - I can't find anything about his life before MS
and I have really really looked short of reading every town history in PA! I
also can't find out about his siblings although I feel it is at least
possible that some of the other early MS Clarkes are related to him - if you can
find that out I'd love to know it!
I do have the Calvit book and a Clarke book and I can assure you that Martha
Calvit Clarke did not marry mr jacobs in 1819 - the rootsweb guys are wrong
- someone was making the same assumption and everyone copied it just like
many also have her father as Joseph Calvit (true) and her spouse as Fnu Clarke -
what does THAT mean?
I look forward to finding more about this family - I'll follow all real
clues! -
