Hi Kenneth:
This is Latayne. I was thinking the same thing. I left a recent
message--about the Sand Bar duel -- then the conversation went dry! Sure
hope I didn't scare everybody off!
Bye for now.
Our new list is doing so well! Thanks everyone for the activity and the
kind words.
FYI -
I will be out of town Tuesday evening the 27th to Tuesday evening August
3rd to attend a wedding and visit family in Louisiana.
Then I'll be out of town again Saturday, August 7th to Thursday night
August 12th in Columbus, OH to volunteer to be a slave at a conference for
a non-profit organization for which I used to work.
Basically, I'll be unavailable July 27 - August 12.
If you need to unsubscribe, change your subscription from list to digest,

I'm glad ya'll told me about the www.rootsweb.com/~larapide/history/eakin2.htm parts 2-4 the "Sandbar Duel" and the Civil War parts are really interesting. The part about James Madison Wells selling out to General Banks and the Yankees is really good.

MIKE, IT IS GOOD TO SEE YOU ARE UP AND RUNNING. I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM YOU IN
A WHILE. I'LL BET YOU COULD TELL US ALL SOME REAL GOOD STORIES ABOUT THESE
CALVITS. PHILIP
Kenneth, don't feel to bad about losing the stuff. My grandfather gave me
buckets of Indian arrows and hatchet heads he found as he plowed behind a
mule and I lost every one. That's why this stuff is so important to me. I
envy those who had forethought to keep things like that. My brother Benny
keeps all kinds of stuff but I let it get away. Philip
Benny......
I don't have any family legend on it.......just what I sent earlier from
the "Mississippi River Routes" publication.

Thanks again.

Please don't yell.........I didn't copy the whole article......I was
interested in the article on the duel with Abijah Hunt and Judge George
Poindexter.......but maybe someone has kept this older edition.....let's
hope! But here's what it says:
"The Sand Bar Fight"
Date: Sep 1827
Parties: Dr. Thomas H. Maddon; Samuel H. Wells, brother of Thomas
Jefferson and Governor J. Madison Wells; Maddox's second, Colonel (later
General) Robert A. Crain; also on the side of Maddox, Sheriff (also,
Major) Norris Wright, Alfred Blanchard, and Cary Blanchard, all of Rapides
Parish, Louisiana;
Maddox's surgeon, Dr. Denny of Natchez; Well's second ______McWhorter;
also on the side of Wells, James Bowie, Richard Cuney, Jefferson Wells,
and General Sam Cuney, also of Rapides.
Weapons: Pistols, a Bowie knife, and possibly a "sword cane".
Summary: The "Sand Bar Fights" was supposed to be a duel between two men,
Dr. Thomas H. Maddox and Samuel Wells. Unfortunately the only two
accounts that survive are both from the Maddox side. One account written
by Dr. Maddox in 1880 and the other, by Maddox's second, Colonel Robert A.
Crain confirm that both parties to the duel were living in or near
Alexandria (Rapides Parish), Louisiana, when Wells send an "offensive
Carte Blanche," which Maddox.................................next

BENNY,
Frederick Calvit's Grandson, Samuel Levi Wells 3rd Participated In The Duel. His Second Was Jim Bowie Who Received A Cane Sword Wound To The Chest, I Was Aways Told That He Never Fully Recovered And This Is Why He Was Having Physical Problems At The Alamo.
I Was Alway Told That My Great Grandfather, Tacitus Calvit 2nd Was Murdered. They Said His Body Contained More Wounds Than A Fall Would Produce. When I Was A Kid My Grandmother Gave Me His Bayonet And Gave My First Cousin His Saber. Over The Years I Dont Know What Happened To Them.

Are you referring to the Sand Bar Fight in Sept 1827 between Dr. Thomas H. Maddox and Samuel Wells?
