Hi mjb - Since Winthrop, IA is in Buchannan Co., I checked my records and
discovered this in the 1870 census of Newton Twp., Buchannan Co., IA,
Quasqueton P.O., pg. 525B, 28 July, house and family 58, Line 10:
THOMAS CALVIN 65m farmer; $3500/$1770; b. Scotland [parents foreign born]
Elizabeth Calvin 65f keeping house; b. Scotland ditto
John Calvin 26m farmer $2500/-0-; b. Scotland ditto
ELIZABETH BROWN 17f teaching school; b. England ditto
Maria Risk 7f b. IA
Thomas Calvin was born ca 1805-1808 in Scotland. He marr. ca 1835 in
Scotland to Elizabeth [Gibson] Risk, born 1805 at Wigtonshire nr. Moffat,
Scotland, daughter of Joseph Gibson and Margaret Moffit. Thomas and
Elizabeth immigrated ca 1852, first residing in Saratoga Co., NY for three
years, then in 1855 to Buchannan Co., IA where Thomas settled permanently.
He had at least 4 children:
1. Margaret Calvin b. 1837; m. 1859 to Mahlon McKee.
2. Samuel Calvin b. 2 Feb 1840 at Wigtonshire, Scotland; d. 17 Apr 1911 at
Iowa City, Johnson Co., IA; marr. Sept 1865 at Hopkinton, Delaware Co., IA
to Mary Louise Jackson.
3. JOHN CALVIN b. Oct 1843 Scotland; died after 1911 at Kansas City, MO; mc
1881 to Elizabeth____, b. Dec 1853 in England. [Obviously, this is
Elizabeth Brown, age 17 in 1870, and residing in the household of her future
husband's parents.] In 1900, John and Elizabeth and family resided on
Wabash Ave., in Kansas City, Kaw Twp., Jackson Co., MO. Children per the

Samuel was a geologist and a professor of natural history.] Also "Leading

Historical Press, Cedar Rapids, IA, pp. 362-368. Samuel Calvin, A.M.,

4. Data from a descendant regarding her research on Thomas Calvin, and
especially on his wife, Elizabeth [Gibson] Risk.
And what of little 7 yr. old Maria Risk in the household of Thomas and
Elizabeth Calvin in 1870! According to a descendant, Elizabeth [Gibson]
Risk had a son, Alexander Risk, bc 1827, by her first marriage. Alexander
Risk came to America with the Calvins and "died a wealthy man. Thomas and
Elizabeth pretty much raised his daughter, Maria, as Alexander Risk married
3 times and didn't have much luck with wives."
I have some further details of interest to you on these people and will be
glad to share that info if you'll e.mail me directly.

Mr. Calvin's given name may have been John/James/?? Don't have a year for
their marriage but her given name "Lizzie" may have been short for Elizabeth
nee Browne. Her Father was John Browne b. bet 1816-1836 in England and
moved to Canada, then after his wife died in Canada he moved with some or
all of his children to Chicago, IL. His children were; Lizzie, Lucy,
Clara?, Sidney and unamed girl. "Lizzie" met Mr. Calvin in Winthrop, Iowa
when she went to teach school there, but they were married in Chicago, IL
Any information would be greatly appreciated. mjb
