James is included in "The Calvin Families" by Claude Calvin [Pasadena CA, 1945]
as "born in Fayette County, Kentucky, Oct. 2, 1829; died in Jewell County, Kansas,
April 3, 1903. Moved to Illinois with his parents [Rev. Dennis Calvin and Melinda
(Sheppard) Calvin] in 1833 when a boy four years of age. Grew up in Illinois and became a
farmer. Married there to Mildred Jane Rosberry. [sic] Some time after the Civil War he
moved to Jewell County, Kansas, near the town of Courtland, where he lived the rest of his
life."
James had brothers Leander Calvin, Thomas Fielding Calvin, William Henry Calvin and Louis
Oscar Calvin. The author of the genealogy "The Calvin Families" was a son of
Thomas Fielding Calvin of Joplin MO. William Henry Calvin died at Greer ID in 1927.
Louis O. Calvin died at San Diego CA in 1931. Leander was a deaf-mute, and never married,
and no more information about him was given.
"Four children [of James and Mildred Jane], as follows:
156. John, b. Dec. 20, 1870; moved to Alberta, Canada, near Calgary; Rancher; never
married.
157. James, b. Dec., 1872; mar. Anna Wing; moved to Alberta, Canada, near Calgary;
rancher.
158. Jennie, b. Jan. 9, 1874; mar. Joseph Jackson; resides at Salina, Kansas.
159. Ellen, b. Jan. 14, 1876; mar. Richard Owens."
Claude Calvin's work is said by some to be riddled with inaccuracies, but since this
branch is his own family the data is probably pretty accurate. It still bears
double-checking, though.
Good luck with all your searches,
Lynn E. Calvin
Saratoga County NY
