Lena May Williams Calvin
12/29/2007 - Lena May Williams Calvin, 89, formerly of Fairview Street, Corry, died
Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at the Lutheran Skilled Nursing Home in Jamestown, N.Y.
Mrs. Calvin was born January 28, 1918, at Lindsey Hollow Road, Concord Township, Pa., the
daughter of the late Guy and Laura Melinda Gates Williams.
She was raised and educated in Concord Township, where she attended Lindsey Hollow School
and then Steadman School in Wayne Township. She graduated from Corry High School in 1936
and following graduation, she attended Edinboro State Teacher's College (Edinboro
University) and received her teaching degree. Over the years, Mrs. Calvin had taught
grades 1 through 8 in Fairview Township, West Springfield and Pittsburgh. She then taught
in Corry area schools at Fairview Street School and Wright Elementary School and retired
in 1978 after 36 years of teaching.
While a resident of Corry, she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church
where she was involved with the United Methodist Women's Group and the Ruth Circle,
playing an active role in missions. In her earlier years, she had been a member of the
Evangelical United Brethren Church, where she taught Sunday School in the primary
department.
Mrs. Calvin had been an active member of the Corry Area Retired Teachers Association and
was a Shaklee Distributor for many years.
For the past 10 years, Mrs. Calvin had been a resident at Loyalton Assisted Living of
Lakewood, N.Y. and at Memory Garden of Jamestown, N.Y.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Merle and Robert
Williams.
Mrs. Calvin is survived by two daughters,
Carolyn Barnes and her husband, Chuck of Dewittville, N.Y. and
Judy Kristin and her husband, Kenneth Hood
of Kenmore, N.Y.;
three grandchildren, Heather Olson of Garden Valley, Calif., Jennifer May and Kenneth
Andrew Hood,
both of Kenmore, N.Y.
and by many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Bracken Funeral Home, 315 N. Center St., Corry, on Monday from 10
a.m. until the time of the funeral service there at 11 a.m. The Rev. John Zimmerman,
pastor of the United Methodist Church in Corry, will officiate.
Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Corry.
