Thanks to the generosity of Shelley in rescuing and sharing the information
in the Calvin-Simpkins Bible records, newspaper items, photos and other
documents, I am able to add some to the information appearing below the
following message.
John and Mary [Simpkins] Calvin's daughter, Minnie, b. 12 Aug 1869 in West
Salem Twp., Mercer Co., PA, married 23 Mar 1898 in Warren Twp., Trumbull
Co., OH to Guy B. Dillon [MR Vol. 11, pg. 390, Cert. #1168]. Guy was born
ca Apr 1871 in OH and was a house painter by trade. It was with Minnie that
the widowed Mary Calvin resided after the death of her husband in 1907.
Oddly enough, the 1910 census of the Guy Dillon household does not include
Mary Calvin. However, it also did not include the two Dillon sons, even
though Minnie stated that she was the mother of 3 children, 2 living in
1910. I believe this was purely a goof on the part of the census taker
because Mary Calvin was definitely with the Dillon family in the 1920 census
and was still residing with them when she celebrated her 86th birthday on 1
Feb 1932, and also when she died in 1938. Guy and Minnie lived at 424
Stiles Ave., Warren, OH until sometime after 1920 but before 1932 they had
moved to 917 Stiles NW, Warren, OH. The 2 surviving children of Guy B. &
Minnie [Calvin] Dillon were: Howard Dillon bc Dec 1899; and Verne Dillon bc
1902.
The second daughter and child of John & Mary [Simpkins] Calvin is listed in
Bible records as "Dove" Calvin, born 28 Dec 1870. However, in census
records, she appears as Emma A. or Emily A. except in 1910 when she is
listed as Emily D. She married 18 Dec 1890 to Thomas A. McDowell, born ca
1861 PA. This family resided in West Salem Twp., Mercer Co., PA. "Dove"
may have been a nickname or one of Emily's given names. Thomas A. McDowell
was a farmer. Their children in the household in the 1910 and 1920 census
are as listed in the family Bible records below except for the child Lloyd
W. who was born in 1898 and died in 1899 and thus does not appear in the
1900 census.
The third child and only son of John and Mary [Simpkins] Calvin was Roy
Gibson Calvin born 8 Dec 1875. In the 1900 census of Mercer Co., PA, Roy
was enumerated as a laborer in the household of Henry Rickert in Pymatuning
Twp. He apparently went to Trumbull Co., OH after 1900 with his parents
where he appears in the 1910 and 1920 census. Roy G. married ca 1909 to
Luella _________, born ca 1883 OH. In 1910, Roy's occupation was drayman
and in 1920, he was a laborer for the county. He was still living in
Warren, OH in 1932 according to the clipping regarding his mother's 86th
birthday celebration. A son is listed in the household in 1920 - Harry J.
Calvin, born ca 1914.
John Calvin's death record also appears in Trumbull Co. records. It lists
his date of death as 6 Feb 1907 and his age at death as 67 years 10 months
and 24 days. This does not quite tally with his date of birth as given in
the Bible record, working out more closely to 13 Mar 1839. I don't know
which is incorrect - the Bible record or John's age at death.
I hope this additional information will help in locating a descendant of
John and Mary [Simpkins] Calvin and I am taking the liberty of copying this
information to the Colvin rootsweb list since many Calvin descendants
subscribe to that list.

Mercer Co. PA. Mrs. CALVIN is enjoying unusually good health for one of her

of the housework. She takes a keen interest in the happenings of the day,

· Letter Addressed Dear Cousin from May H. GUILES, talks of going to visit
Cynthann and then onto Julietts, also mentions Judd as if he has passed
away recently, no date on the letter

· Military discharge papers for John CALVIN dated 1863
Based on limited research I believe I find John & Mary CALVIN living in West
Salem, PA during the 1880 census along with three children, Minnie E. age
10, Emma A. age 9, and William Roy (I'm assuming that this is Roy G. shown
in the bible) age 4. All are listed as having been born in PA with Mary
listing her parents place of birth as Ohio. Mary & John's youngest child
was recorded at birth with the name Roy Gibson CALVIN, so I'm not sure where
William Roy came from in the census records.
Mary SIMPKINS father appears to have been Peter F. SIMPKINS the son of Peter
SIMPKINS and Cynthia ACHESON. Mary's parents were recorded in the 1880
census living in West Salem, PA along with four children, George age 24
(George died in 1917), Almon age 22, Perry age 20, and Florence age 15 and
in addition a grandson, Eddie age 1. Mary's Mother Emily DILLEY was born in
OH, but her parents were born in NJ. I believe that Emily's parents were
Joseph DILLEY Sr. and Mary BURNETT.
Mary's oldest sister, Juliaett appears to have married George Wallace KARR
and died in 1929 in Vernon, OH. Mary's brother William E. SIMPKINS and his
wife Lucinda FELL were also living in West Salem, PA during the 1880 census,
though they had no children. Brother Joseph and wife Ruth Elizabeth TERRY
were also living in West Salem with 4 children, Lilly B. age 11, Howard age
7, Eva M. age 6, and Clarance age 2. Joseph died in 1926. Another brother,
Linus David SIMPKINS and his wife Georgianna FELL were included in the 1880
census of West Salem, PA with no children as well. It appears that their
first child was Linus Leroy SIMPKINS b. 27 Jun 1881 at West Salem, PA.
Linus died in 1931.
Not sure how Robert SIMPKINS of Youngstown, OH was related, however, I do
find Robert & Damaris SIMPKINS with daughter Edna age 13, and Harry age 10
living in Youngstown, OH during the 1880 census. Robert & Damaris are
listed as age 45 and 43 respectively, both born in PA to parents born in PA,
their oldest is b. in OH and the youngest in PA. I believe that Robert is
the son of Enoch SIMPKINS and Mary NEELY and that his wife Damaris' maiden
name was WOODS.
Not sure which of the CALVIN girls (Minnie or Dove) married into the
MCDOWELL Family but I do find Social Security records for both Lyle and
Robert MCDOWELL. Lyle's SS# was issued in PA and he died in Crawford
County, PA on 29 Feb 1988. Robert's SS# was issued in Michigan and he died
at Sharon, PA in May 1971.
I'm hoping to be able to locate someone from this family so that this
wonderful old treasure can be returned to the care of family. If you are a
member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley
