Geroge, How about the continued study of Leonard Calvert's children - I am
especially focused on Mary Calvert wife of Isaac Chapline and her progeny
and their spread throughout the US. Lord Baltimore was only one child of
that family. Dick Matteson College Park MD

Subject: [CALVERT-L] Sixteen Tribes of Calverts
Date: Thursday, March 26, 1998 9:33 AM
Dear Fellow Calverts,
I have had recently correspondence with other study group
members about the different branches of the Calvert clan.
In theory, we may all descend from a 13th century fellow
named "Calfherd', however like the ancient Hebrews, we now
have many lost tribes.
Before looking at the entire family, I thought some folks
might be interested seeing the family lines identified by
Ella Foy O'Gorman in her book "Descendants of Virginia
Calverts". Basically, she ended up with 16 family branches
with most being descended from Calverts who lived in
Virginia.
Ella Foy numbered the family members starting with George
the 1st Lord Baltimore as #1. This numbering system breaks
at #4586. From this point to #8130 the various individual
family lines had not been traced back to the 1st George.
(Ella left "gaps" in the numbering after #4586 so that
additional family members could be added for the earlier
generations.)
Ella's book revolves around the numbers assigned to family
members. The numbers shown at the right in the Table of
Contents (reproduced below) refer to "family members", not
page numbers. For example, #8130 is Annabel Lee Colvard
who is the last Calvert listed in the book on page 719.
Table of Contents copied from Descendants of Virginia
Calverts, 1947 by Ella Foy O'Gorman.

Besides the Virginia Calverts (shown above), the other
possible family groupings, might be :
1. The Calverts who remained in England.
2. The Calverts from Ireland, includes the Quakers and
the Calverts who settled in Cortland Co., NY. (There
are quite a few study group members from this line of
the family)
3. Descendants of the Lord Baltimore line, thru Cecil
the 2nd Lord Baltimore. (Laurie Ann is the only one in
the study group from this line to best of my
knowledge.)
4. Calverts who immigrated to the United States,
Canada, Australia, etc. at various times.
5. Certainly, there are other major groups
and each group could be divided into many
sub-groups, like the 16 sub-groups for the
Virginia Calverts.
Identifying family branches, sub-branches, and so on could
prove to be a valuable study aid. My thought is that this
would enable people to work together in searching for
common ancestors. Your thoughts, comments, and suggestions
would be most welcome.
