Subject: A Sincere Apology
Hello again everyone,
This is regarding my infamous GENEALOGICAL SUICIDE POST.
I humbly offer my sincerest apology for the e-mail bomb. I assure you it
was done out of ignorance and poor judgement, not malice. I had no idea
that it would be so pervasive. To make matters worse, many of you
unknowingly replied to the entire list, and others replied to those
replies. A condition I had not anticipated. I have been well informed that
this puts a real strain on the Rootsweb mailserver as well as others and
have apologized personally to it's owner.
You may notice this message is to one list only, and others will be spaced
out. If you do reply, please be certain to reply to me only and not the
list itself.
Also, I would like to clarify something that apparently I did not make
very clear in my original post.
I did not mean to imply that the internet resources, sharing information,
or other online work is bad. On the contrary I wholeheartedly support
efforts by those who publish information valuable to all of us. I also have
no criticism for those who do not properly document. What is proper? Who is
to judge? Certainly not me!
No, rather my real concern, and one which has been reinforced by countless
replies I have received, is that many of us are copying entire trees into
our own databases and then resubmitting the whole to public databases
claiming it as our own work. Worse yet, those trees are then pasted and
repasted into more and more trees, invading us all much like my previous
email did.
On a positive note, I can tell you there is much unspoken interest in this
subject and frustration over the problem. In the future, I will attempt to
share bits of the pros and cons I have received but I promise to keep my
messages small and infrequent.
Respectfully,
Dave
