Thanks for the help. I got through to the FTM data base and found
the solution.
I also found I needed to have an update installed. A fix to go to 5.0b
foound at URL
http://www.familytreemaker.com/support/5gedimp.html
You would think after registering the program and being on the
mail and email lists that they would send me needed program
fix updates. Never seen any so I lost faith in what the FTM program
could do for me. I have made George a generations 1 - 6 GEDCOM
file for his testing and will be updating the reference numbers to the
next couple of generations. I manage to clip out all the superfluous
individuals with the new file I created.
While the program allows the task to be done I found it available in
a round about method that is used. I was using PAF and it was
intuitively obvious how to do the needed task. The program should
be designed with the goal to serve the user and not the user reading
manuals volumes to serve the program IMHO. ;-)
I used to be a software programmer. Now retired.... gee it is nice to
use that word since I have been struggling for 2 years to get my
SS Disability. Now just waiting on the dough.
I appreciate the email and posting. It's nice to know there are folks
who help each other in the group.
Cheers

Subject: [CALVERT-L] GARY LEE CALVERT & FTM PROBLEM ...
In a message dated 99-11-13 01:44:49 EST, you write:
<< Query! Does the FTM version you are using allow you to generate
a GEDCOM file with a range from one individual down 5 or 6
generations? The version 5.0 I have dumps the whole 2000+ names
into the GEDCOM file. I can't believe they did that! >>

How to SAVE a file with certain individuals in it. READ CAREFULLY, so u
DON'T mess up your original file.
Hi Gary (and ALL that this may help)...
Re the above...
If u open your file, go to the oldest person in your tree you wish to star
t
with:
On the MENU BAR
Under VIEW ====> "OUTLINE DESCENDANT TREE
then on the MENU BAR go to :
CONTENTS ===>>> # OF GENERATIONS TO SHOW (list how many you want, which
for
this example could be 3)...
You'll have the "exact number of people in the tree that you want and
you'll
see ONLY those generations on the screen, with ONLY the people
related TO
that top person in the tree.
THEN....
Do this part EXACTLY, or u can mess up your file !!!!!!
Go to:
FILE =====> COPY/EXPORT INDIVIDUALS IN OUTLINE DESCENDANT TREE
Be VERY careful.. ONLY use the COPY /EXPORT "INDIVIDUALS" just as stated
above.....
and SAVE the file under ANOTHER NAME than the ORIGINAL file you have !
Ok.. let's just use a name like : TEST1.FTW for this test....
This "should be stored" in your FTW directory by default, unless you
specify
otherwise. Just remember to see WHAT the PATH is where you stored
the
file.
It maybe something like:
C:\FTW\TEST1.FTW
This is the path (or directory) AND the new file name. You will now have
this file showing at the top of the FTM program u opened. So, u'll just
have
to go back to the directory & REOPEN your own original file later
when you
want the whole file. You can ONLY send this new file to another person IF
it
is NOT opened.
Now you have ONLY the folks you WANT in this OTHER NEW TREE ! And, NOT
all
your entire file !
You can now send this to anyone you want !
Hope this helps...
