I have chosen to believe Leonard Calvert married Anne Brent although I
always qualify this belief by stating that I have found no proof. I
accepted this marriage in my own mind because a daughter was named
'Anne' and his son, William, named a dau. 'Anne'. I know how Mrs.
O'Gorman felt as I have poured through her book so many times, I almost
have it memorized. :) As far as believing something about these Calverts
without actual proof, I can only speak for myself in that I always
continue to look for proof since I know I could be wrong, but those of
us who always want proof of our 'assumptions' about the Calverts, always
continue searching. Personally, I don't think anyone will find the proof
we seek - so assumptions, to me, are acceptable because there are so
many excellent researchers here who read of these 'assumptions' and
continue to search for the evidence to prove us right or wrong. Mrs.
O'Gorman made many of these assumptions, always qualifying them, but
thus putting thoughts into our minds that might help in future research.
If one person believes one thing, and another a different one, we at
least have thoughts to help us in doing our research. I like to hear
what people 'think' even though unproven. If it's different than my
beliefs, it makes me really stop and think out my own thoughts.

Dear Fellow Calverts,

I have not conducted CALVERT research for a
number of years. My last recollection is
that there was no proof of Ann Brent's
marriage to Leonard CALVERT, although it was
believed possible. I have recently noticed
several mentions of Ann BRENT as the wife of
Leonard as if it is now an accepted fact. Has
proof of their marriage been found?
I have not any proof of Leonard's marriage to
Ann. The belief has long been that Leonard
Calvert did marry a "Brent", and many of us
continue to show "Ann Brent" as being his wife.
Actually, he probably married one of Ann's
cousins, since there is written evidence that Ann
was still using her maiden name (Brent) long
after Leonard's death.
Another questionable relationship mentioned by
BK423(a)aol.com is:
Also, there was uncertainty that George
CALVERT III was the son of William and
Elizabeth STONE CALVERT. Has something been
located to verify this relationship? I would
appreciate any information on these
connections.
George Calvert III can be better described as
George Calvert of Stafford County, Va. There is
no written proof showing that he was the son of
William Calvert of Charles County, Maryland.
This relationship is establish on the basis of
tradition or "ardent belief" as one Calvert
researcher put it.
Again many of us continue to show this George
as being the son of William Calvert. This is in
keeping with a tradition that is perhaps 100
years old, and yet may be totally wrong or
perhaps totally correct. Who knows?
The harm done by continuous publishing of
"unproven" relationships is that we quit looking
for the "proof". BK423(a)aol.com's message is a
helpful reminder that further research is needed.
