I just returned from a day in Sharpsburg on business where I also stopped
at Mt. Gilead Cemetery. A very prominent and well-kept sign on Route 11
proclaims "Founded 1848", but the cemetery is _horribly_ overgrown and
totally neglected.
I'm positive I've seen Mt. Gilead noted as a final resting place for
Calverts who have preceeded us, but I can't find a name to connect (or I'm
simply mistaken). The cemetery appears to be large enough for 50 or 60
graves, but at least 80% of them are illegible, have broken headstones
and/or are completely covered by lichen and thick vines, brambles and brush.
I'll be returning to the Sharpsburg area every few weeks; if there are
Calverts to be found at Mt. Gilead Cemetery I'll make it a point to bring a
machete along and post what I find, if anything.
If you know of names, please send them to me directly using "Mt. Gilead"
for the subject line.
