Fact: John from Elbert Co., GA is listed in the "Big Spring Presbyterian
Church" in Newville, Cumberland Co., PA along with his entourage of Appleby's
and McCurdy's. John is listed as age 20. He show up in the Georgia Tax
Digests, 1800- 1802 , year listed is 1801 Along with John is Joseph and
Robert. Next we move along to Tennessee where Robert appears in Williamson
Co. to marry a Nancy Porter (bondsman Robert Porter). "Robert of Graves Co.,
KY" is supposed to have a son named Porter who moved to Texas before the
Mexican War. Texas 1860 Census has a R.P. Porter who was born in TN in 1812.
Could he have been called by his second name? 1870 Texas Census show a Robert
Colbert -same county with the same wife and same children. Next we have John
and Joseph show up in Sisler's Early Tennessee Tax Lists with John in Bedford
(1812), Joseph in Bedford (1812) Robert in Maury (1811 & 1816) A list of
Tennessee land grants show Joseph in Giles Co. (1821) and Maury 1827, Robert
in Maury in 1822.. O'Gorman has John in Bedford County in 1811 and I found
some dealings listing John and one of the McCurdy's but did not copy it as I
wasn't tracking him (wish he was mine). In 1830 Robert show up in Graves
County KY where he gets a land grant also his son Robert Levi Calvert gets a
land grant and they settle in the area. The Presbyterian religion seems to
tie this group together. Robert's son, Robert Levi, became a Cumberland
Presbyterian minister. Joseph is buried in a Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery
. We know John and the Mc Curdy's and Appleby's were Presbyterian but in the
Banner of Peace and Cumberland Presbyterian Advocate I found a J.N. Calvert
being ordained at the Hopewell Church in White Co., IL (1843) . This would
have had to have been John's son as his grandson with the same name of John
Napoleon Calvert was not born until 1843. Has anyone located the parents of
any of the above or does anyone know of an older Calvert in Newville or
Cumberland Co., PA that could possibly be the father of this group. I would
appreciate any feed back on this group - or if there is anything I haven't
found yet please e-mail me.
