Hi all,
It has been brought to my attention that many of you may have
misunderstood my message about unsubscribing for the holidays.
It was only meant to let those of you know that have limited space
mailboxes and would be away for the holidays. In the event that
your mailbox should fill up, it sends "bounces" to the server at
Rootsweb telling them that your mailbox is full. When this
happens 8 times, the server automatically removes you from the
list. I just wanted to make things easier on you and the server by
letting you know how to unsubscribe yourself so that you would
know that you had been removed rather than trying to post and not
being able to when you return. If you are not going to be out of
town, or know that your mailbox does not fill up, then there is no
need for you to unsubscribe.
Also, in a previous message, I had addressed the idea of joining
Rootsweb as part of your Christmas giving. It is not required, but I
thought I should make you all aware that you do have the option to
do so. There is no fee for any of the list services you receive, but it
does cost to provide them. The wonderful people at Rootsweb can
use your financial support to continue to keep these services free.
It's kind of like public television... it's free programming, but it does
cost to provide. At the present time, only 1% of all subscribers are
members, sponsors or donors to Rootsweb. With over 500,000
subscribers, that is not very many people. Your donation goes to
provide things such as new servers and other technical equipment
to keep the lists and web pages running, technical support, and
projects such as the US GENWeb hosting. So, in short, any
amount is a blessing to them. There are several levels of
membership which convey certain priviledges such as list
ownership and GenConnect board ownership. Also web space for
personal genealogical pages at certain levels. I am a donor and
am very proud of that fact. The way I look at it is that at the lowest
level, which is "member" you are paying only $1 per month, $12
per year, for all the services you currently receive. At the donor
level, which is several levels up, you are paying less than $3 per
week for the services, or $10 per month/$100 per year (due to
service fees for charge transactions) which include 75 megs of web
space and 8 lists and boards. But again, all is voluntary. I just feel
the need to make sure everyone is aware of the option and is able,
if they choose, to make a donation. :)
Here's wishing all a happy holidays and a wonderous new year!
