Calvert List Vicki re Harrison
Oct. 16, 1997
The Burr Harrison/Harris is so darn complicated, I can't make heads or
tails of it. I have tried.
There is a book SETTLERS BY THE LONG GREY TRAIL by J. Houston Harrison,
Genealogical Pub. Co., Baltimore, 1 984 , which might prove useful. It
mainly concerns early (very) settlers and traces them later on. It is
about the Harrisons, all different branches. The only Calvert who is
mentioned is Ann Calvert who m. Valentine Hollingsworth.
The info. about the very early Harrisons is similiar to that of O'Gorman,
but there is much, much more on the family. Burr is mentioned more than
once. Also Cuthbert is mentioned and the family history and who belonged
to whom is discussed. According to the author, there myriad connections
inc. Lincoln, Hanks, Washington, and some of my cousins on my mother's
side. And also some on my dad's.
A few example quotes: There were Harrisons in Rockingham. And in Augusta
there appears a Matthew Harrison son-in-law of Col. James Wood (whose
family connects to some of my cousins). "Burr Harrison of the County of
Dunmore vs. Josiah Davidson. bond dated 11th March, 1773." Later,
"Cuthbert, Burr, Matthew, and probably George also, were descendants of
an old Stafford Co. family, some of whom later moved into Dettingen
parish, Prince Wm." Some detail: "Burr Harrison (l) m. Mary Smith, widow
of Edwin, and had William and Thomas (1). Thomas (1) b. Sept., 7, 1665,
d. Aug. 13, 1746, was an officer of Stafford 1 700 , had---Burr (II),
Cuthbert, m. Frances Barns; Thomas (II) m. Ann Grayson; Wm; Sarah
Elizabeth; Frances m. Valentine Peyton; and Ann Frances m. J. McMilan.
Burr (II) m. July 31,
1731 Anne Barns " Some of the desc. of the family became
heads of important families, esp. in Leesburg. Burr (II) re-
moved to KY after the Rev.
The info. on the various Harrisons is great. There is some on Harris.
Shepherd listed , but no Sarah (#4908). Hayne but no Haynie and no Mary
Haynie (#491 0) . Culpeper; Anderson; lots of Gordons; Faulkner, Zatella;
Thomas Price--does not fit date cited by O'Gorman.
This isn't much help, but the book can be ordered and might prove useful
if you know what you are looking for. Good luck.
