was Charles) is listed as being born in Oct., 1756. Do we have an original
source for our William's birthdate?
Dan, and others:
The source I have used for William Calvert's birthrate is a document entitled
"Bible Records of the Calvert Family." This document is a very early style
photocopy (now turning brown) in my possession. The copy is typewritten and
double-spaced. I obtained the copy from my grandmother. The original source is
unknown. The transcription below duplicates the copy, (except for deleting
double-spacing), including misspellings, etc. It is unclear whether the strings
of "####" represent material that originally appeared in a Bible, but was
deleted
by the typist, or whether the marks actually appear in the Bible as some sort of
separator.

Now for some comments on this typescript.
It is possible that the typescript is simply a copy of what appears in O'Gorman,
except (1) there are some differences in dates, [for example, the death dates of
Mary Calvert Finch and of Elizabeth Calvert (on p.2) ]; (2) there are some
differences in names [for example, Nodding's wife Jane's maiden name; O'Gorman
=
Morley or Bowles, Bible Record=Bowles; Lenard in "Bible Records, p.2" vs.
Leonard]; and (3) there is more information in the "Bible Records" than
appears
in O'Gorman [for example, the Elizabeth C. Broyles, Lewis H. Broyles and Mary
Ellen Broyles on p. 1 and the death dates for the two Leonard Broyles on p.2; and
the fact that Jabez's wife's maiden name was Barnes, not Hawkins =O'Gorman].
There
are other obvious problems in the typescript. For example, William and Elizabeth
(Nodding) Calvert's daughter Elizabeth's name is spelled Elizabert. And Nodding
Calvert's wife's name is spelled Janes.
These differences lead me to believe that the "Bible Records" came from a
source
which is either different or more complete than O'Gorman. It is even possible that
O'Gorman used the "Bible Records" document as her source. In other words, I
believe that the "Bible Records" source is different from and earlier that
O'Gorman. Anybody familiar with this record?
As an aside, back in July of 1998, Janis Ragar <jragar(a)murlin.com> posted the
following to the CALVERT-L, but did not actually state that the info came from a
Bible. However, it appears that it must have. If so, then it may be from the same
source as the "Bible Records," or it could be a separate Bible in the John
Calvert
family. Perhaps someone can clarify this.

Perhaps Janis can clarify the source of the information.
As an aside, I have an old, handwritten note in my files, source unknown, which
states:
"Malinda Jane Calvert's great grandfather was William Calvert, born in
England in 1642 and died in Maryland 10 Jan 1682."
Malinda's grandfather is our William Calvert who married Elizabeth Nodding.
Obviously this note cannot be correct, since our William was not born until about
1757, which would mean that he was born some 70 years after his father's death!
The note, however, does present the family tradition that was conveyed to me by my
grandmother (a granddaughter of Malinda).
One question is whether there are any William Calverts that match the dates 1642 -
10 Jan 1682?
If there is one, then maybe we should look at his descendants for our William.
Well, none of this directly answers your question about a reliable source of
William Calvert's birth date and the possiblity that he is the son of Benedict
Swingate Calvert. I think it is possible that William Calvert's birth date has
been incorrectly stated, meaning that he could have been born in 1758. Another
possibility is that Benedict Swingate began writing his Will or wrote a draft of
his will sometime earlier in 1779 or even in 1778, but did not get it into final
form until Dec. 1, 1779, and by then had simply failed to recalculate to determine
if William was still under 21. Since Benedict makes no provision for Charles, who
supposedly died in England in 1777, he must have been aware of his death, leading
to the conclusion that the will was written no earlier than 1777.
The part of Benedict S. Calvert's Will that would be most troubling in that event
is that he seems to scramble up the order of bequeathing to his children - first
to Edward Henry, b. 1766, then to George, b. 1768, then to Charles, b. 1756 then
to John, b. unknown, and then to William, b. 1757, suggesting of course that John
comes between Charles and William.
And, as you pointed out, there is the obvious conflict between the birth dates of
Charles and William, being only a little over 4 months apart. And then we have the
obvious error with Elizabeth Nodding Calvert's listed birth date = 29 Feb. 1761.
[BTW, which was the actual leap year, 1760, 62, or 64?] Anyway, 1761 was not one!
Also, Benedict and Elizabet Calvert Calvert are listed as being married on 21 Apr.
1748. Rebecca was born 25 Dec. 1749, but we have no other birth dates until
Charles in 1756. Were the sons who died young born in the interim, i.e., Philip,
Leonard, and Caecilius? Determining their birthdates may help show where a William
could fit in.
It seems entirely possible that our William is the William listed in the Will of
Benedict. The manner in which he disposed of his property would seem very odd if
that is the case, but what isn't odd about Benedict Swingate Calvert? I still
think that tracking down the will of Benedict's widow Elizabeth Calvert Calvert
might shed some further light on our William. Anybody know in what county she
died. Dwight recently gave the supposed death date as 7 July 1798.
Any way you slice it, we still have a problem making a conclusive determination
that our William is the son of Benedict S. If we could determine that John ever
married, and that his wife's name was Jane, that would help considerably. [It
appears that the John Calvert in Washington Co., TN that had a wife named Jane is
the same John that is associated with our William in land transactions.] Anyone
know anything about the son John?
And because our William, a John Calvert, and a Frederick Calvert seemed to be
associated together in getting land grants in Washington County, TN, in the early
1780's, who is the Frederick, since no son by that name is listed for Benedict. Is
he a son not "lawfully begotten" by Benedict? Or perhaps a cousin to William
and
John? Since I have no clue how old this John or this Frederick may have been at
the time, I still don't have many good conclusion.
