Hello Jim
I saw your query on the Ida County page and the Thomas Calvert on the 1870
census is the following;
April 16,1880 Era
Last Saturday evening about 5 o'clock, Thomas Calvert, who has resided in
this county for the last 12 years, making his home at O. Waterman's and W.
Wilkinson's most of the time, was riding a horse full speed over the prairie
when the animal fell, throwing him forty feet. He struck his head and
shoulders causing him a very severe concussion, paralysis and loss of
sensation in the extremities by injury of the cervical portion of the spine.
He was taken to the house of Joseph Keen on Ed Wilkinson's farm, by Mr. Keen
who was with him at the time. He rallied and seemed to feel much better
until 12 o'clock Sunday night when he had a slight spasm and died within an
hour from hemorraghe upon the base of the brain and cervical part of the
spine.
The deceased was 34 years old at the time of his death, single and had
no
relatives in this country. He was a steady, industrious man and his untimely
death brings saddness to many a heart.
The courthouse records were destroyed by fire prior to June of 1880, so no
other record could be found on him.
