Can't remember if I've already forwarded this to the list. I'm trying to
clean up my hard drive and busy moving and deleting data from my email. My
computer goes in for surgery Tuesday evening. It needs a new hard drive. I
haven't found a way to save my address book so I may loose everyone's
address. Should be back up and running by Friday. Vicki K

Vicki,
We do have a tricky situation here. I have a copy of piece that was
written
in "Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, &
Kniffin, 3rd
ed.,
1886. Allen County". Submitted by Calvert Gibson Ritter
Russell -
Barren
VA.
The article began talking about John D. Calvert, son of James Wesley and
Elizabeth Ritter Calvert. It said, "His grandfather, John D. Calvert,
was a
native of VA born in 1782, married Jane Russell in 1804, and soon
emigrated
from VA and settled near Long Creek, in Barren, now Allen Co, KY.
He,
his
wife and one child made the journey from VA to KY in a two-wheeled
vehicle
called a "cart".....He died in Allen Co., KY in 1856 having
survied his
wife,
who died in 1833." It also said, "he accumulated a large
fortune, which
at
his death descended to his family of twelve children."
I noticed that Francis married the daughter of a John Calvert and later
Margaret Hambrick. His son John married Jane Russell in NC and later
married
"Unk." in 1836 Allen Co. Question is, if John married Jane
in NC, why
did he
go to NC and later return to VA with his wife, only to move to KY
soon
after?
Also, I have no info that John Calvert ever married again after Jane
died.
Archie Russell, who seemed to know more than anyone, never
mentioned to
me
another wife of John Calvert's.
My Dad seems to think John D. Calvert and Jane Russell may have been
linked
to Calvert Distilleries in Ky. He said Calvert Whiskey was one of
the
finest. I have no info regarding this at all. However, it does lead one
to
wonder how he obtain a fortune, especially in those days.
John Colbert Russell came to Missouri in November, 1840. Seems he would
have
surely mentioned his grandfather remarrying, but who know.
I tried to find the letter from Mrs. Russell in Tompkinsville, Ky ( I
received this many year ago), but as I recall she had checked out the
cemeteries there and could not find the grave stones of John and Nancy
Russell, but she said there were a lot of unmarked graves there. They
both
were buried in Calvert Cemetery.
Lu Ann's mother who lives in Franklin, Ky is going to try and find out
where
Long Creek was located. I need to get in touch with her, I
haven't
talked
with her for some time.
Well, I have rambled on enough. Back to your original question...what to
do.
Now for one of my dumb questions....what is the Calvert List? Can
corrections be made thru this? I really think that the info I have, what
info I have, is correct as far as John and Nancy Calvert are concerned.
I
know we still are missing some children, but hopefully a connection
may
be
made to another descendant as I happened to find Lu Ann (Jesse's
gggranddaughter).
John and Nancy Russell had twelve children, only six names I have. John
and
Nancy Russell had one son Joseph who was suppose to go to TN and
Samuel
to
GA. I guess I'll start putting out queries in those states and
see what
happens.
I received an e-mail from Karen Meng who has info on Susan Russell
Pitchford
(John and Nancy's daughter). I'll see if she has any info on
Susan's
family.
She seems to have quite a bit on the Pitchford side. Several years
ago
Archie Holmes from Princeton, NJ stopped by my house looking for info on
the
Pitchford side. He too had Susan's parents as John and Nancy
Calvert
Russell.
I'll let you know what I hear from Karen. Lu Ann also had the same info
you
had from O'Gormans. I wonder if perhaps John D. Calvert's
sister Nancy
may
have married Andrew Hendley. It would be easy enough to confuse the
names
since there were so many with the same name.
Talk to you later.
Jo Ann
