Hi Laurie Ann,
I don't particularly want to get shot as the bearer of bad news so
will try to be helpful in the end but---The George B. Calvert,
prominent, living, dying in Prince Georges County, IMHO did not have
a daughter Ann. Authorites Nicklin and O"Gorman, I believe would agree
on this. Bowie, of course is another very prominent name thereabouts.
I have worked in both those places, by the way.
The religious preference of Ann, as well as her leaving the area,
suggests to me that the George B. you are looking for is a descendent
of the Leonard Calvert line going directly back to Lord Baltimore I,
rather than through Benedict Swingate, the father of the above George
B. Modern George Calvert living in KY, "cybercat" on the net, is a
real expert on most all the Georges. The Leonard line went Baptist,
Church of the Brethren, etc. and moved West.
The P. G. County folks stayed there, became prominent and largely
remained Episcopal. Hope this helps. I started out to prove myself
one of the above. Turns out my cousins and I are none of the above,
just Irish Protestant Preacher types.
Two other thoughts. Ann may have just been born in Bladensburg while
father Goerge was residing there while building the hotel. They may
have been from the Calvert Baptist Enclave near present day
Quantico??? There were likely Quaker Georges around then who would
have had roots in the Chambersberg area but don't know that they went
around building hotels???
Best regards,
Galen Calvert

Forwarded for Laurie Ann:
Hello ...
I am stuck on my 2 Calvert's and would like any info anyone can add..
Ann Calvert b. ? in Bladensburg, MD d. either 1845 or 1856 in
Uniontown, Fayette Co, PA (the two book sources vary) m. Dr. John
Bowie b. 9-11-1769 in "The Hermitage, a Bowie Estate" in Montgomery
Co, MD d. 2-17-1825 in MD.
Ann's father is noted in one of these books to be GEORGE B. CALVERT
(no dates) who was "supposed to be" the one who BUILT the 1st
Washington DC hotel (does anyone know how to prove this).
In a book which lists the marriages and deaths from the Maryland
Gazette newspaper the following appears (which gives the date of the
newspaper the listing was printed in inside the parenthesis)...
CALVERT, George, died Sun., at his residence near Bladensburg, P. G.
Co., aged 70. (Feb 1, 1838).
I think this may be the same George Calvert that is Ann's father, but
have yet to confirm it. After the death of her husband, Ann moved to
Chambersburg, PA and educated her children there. Then she later
moved to Uniontown, PA where they all the children were engaged in
business. Though I have found reference that Ann is buried in the Old
Baptist Cemetery (along with her son & my g-gpa Lucien O. Bowie), due
to the weathering of the elements, I have not been able to visually
find their headstones. Where Lucien in recorded in the church records
of the Grace Baptist Church as being buried in their Old Baptist Cem,
Ann is NOT, yet her obituary notice DOES state she, too, is buried
there. Hmmmm....
I DO know that The Bowie's and Their Kindred book is incorrect, as it
states that Dr. John Bowie "was never married". Yet he was my 3rd
g-gpa & married Ann Calvert & they had 6 children. So, all other
sources after the printing of the Bowie book (1899) that quote from
the Bowie book, are also wrong !
Please....can someone tell me about my Ann & George ?
Thanx so much
