Dear Michael:
The Calvert Study Group has not made much
progress with the English, Irish, and Australian
lines of the family. We need new members from
these countries to join the group and help with
the search for information.
I believe that Frederick Calvert lived in England
and Ireland and eventually died in Italy. What
follows is some information which has been
published about him. (This is not my line of the
Calvert clan.)
"Colonial Families of the United States", Volume
II, by McKenzie, publ. 1911 traces the ancestory
of a Charles Baltimore Calvert on page 163. I have
copies of this pages 163 thru 167. The lineage
traced through Frederick Calvert the 6th and last
Lord Baltimore is as follows:
(1) George Calvert -1st Lord Baltimore
Born 1590 -died 1632, married Anne Mynne
(2) Cecilius Calvert -2nd Lord Baltimore
Son of George and Anne Mynne
Born 1606 -died 1675
(3) Charles Calvert -3rd Lord Baltimore
(Charles, Cecilius, George)
Son of Ceciluis and Lady Anne Arundel
(I know this right because I once stayed in a
motel in "Anne Arundel County, Md")
Born 1630, died Feb. 20, 1714
(4) Benedict Leonard Calvert -4th Lord Baltimore
(Benedict, Charles, Cecilius, George)
Son of Charles Calvert and Jane Lowe(?)
Born 1678-9, Member of Parliament 1714-15,
succeeded to his father's titles and
estates a few weeks prior to his death in
on April 15, 1714.
(5) Charles Calvert -5th Lord Baltimore
(Charles, Benedict, Charles, Cecilius,
George) Son of Benedict Leonard Calvert
and Lady Charlotte Lee (?). Born Sept. 29,
1699, died April 24, 1751.
(6) Frederick Calvert -6th Lord Baltimore
(Frederick, Charles, Benedict, Charles,
Cecilius, George)
Frederick was the last Lord Baltimore and
he died without a lawful heir.
Frederick Calvert - Magazine articles (which I
have not read) are:
1. Cox, Richard J., "Notes on Maryland Historical
Society Manuscript Collections: Some Personal
Letters of Frederick Calvert, Last Lord
Baltimore," Maryland Historical Magazine, Vol. 70,
No. 1, Spring 1975.
2. Shugg, Wallace, "The Baronand the Milliner:
Lord Baltimore's Rape Trial as a Mirror of Class
Tensions in Mid-Georgian London, Maryland
Historical Magazine, Vol. 83, No. 4, Winter 1988.
Your message states that:
"Edward's father was Rowland Calvert who is
supposed to have been the only son of Frederick
Calvert 6th Lord Baltimore and his 2nd wife Mary
Jenson."
There have been discussions in our study about
Frederick's son Benedict Swingate Calvert. From
his letters it is apparent that Frederick had at
least 8 children.
What you have stated seems possible, however to
the best of my knowledge nothing has been
published by our study group to document this. In
fact I haven't seen anything mentioned about
Frederick having a 1st wife much less a 2nd wife.
I hope this information is helpful.
