Dear Brenda, Galen, and Calvert Study Group,
What follows is to the best of my knowledge the
known (or suspected) descendants of Leonard
Calvert through the third generation. (The 1st
generation would be George Calvert, the !st Lord
Baltimore.)
*LEONARD CALVERT -Second Generation
(1st Governor of Maryland and son of George
Calvert the 1st Lord Baltimore)
Leonard was born 1610 in England. He died 1647 in
Maryland. He married Anne Brent in 1642 (or 1643).
They were probably married while he was on a trip
to England.
Children of Leonard and Anne (Brent) Calvert:
1. William, who became a prominent landholder and
high ranking government official in colonial
Maryland.
2. Anne
*WILLIAM CALVERT -Third Generation
(William, Leonard, George)
William was born about. 1643 in Maryland. He was
the son and heir of Leonard Calvert. He had
substantial landholdings and was a prominent
government official. He married Elizabeth
Stone of Virginia in 1662. She was a widow living
with her son, Richard. He died in 1682 (The
administration of his estate was granted to his
widow on January 9, 1683.)
Children of William and Elizabeth Calvert:
1. Charles, who married (1) 1690 Mary Howson.
daughter of Robert Howson of Stafford County,
Virginia and (2) Barbara Kirke. Charles Calvert
moved to Stafford County and lived there for a
number of years. He was born 1662 in Maryland and
moved back to Maryland before his death in 1733.
2. Elizabeth, born 1666 and died 1684/5. She
married James Neale of Charles County, Maryland in
1681.
3. George, who lived in Stafford County, Virginia
and died in 1699. Evidence suggest that he
was a brother of Charles Calvert and a son of the
Honorable William Calvert. He is thought to have
been born in about 1663.
4. William, of St. Mary's County, Maryland.
Believed to be a son of William Calvert, born 1670
and died after 1696.
5. Richard, born 1672 and died November 11, 1718.
He remained unmarried.
6. Joshua, perhaps a son of William who died in
1733
Whether or not the Calvert surname survived into
the 4th generation is not something which can be
proven.
Records in both Maryland and Virginia clearly
show that Charles Calvert was a son of William
and grandson of Leonard. Charles had only
daughters; no sons.
George who is listed as a possible son of Willaim
Calvert is the focus of much controversy. Ella
Foy O'Gorman believed that William Calvert
probably had a son named George. Whether or not
this was the same George who settled in Stafford
County, Virginia in or before 1688 is a
mystery that eludes Calvert researchers.
There are a great many Calverts (probably
thousands) that descend from George Calvert of
Stafford County, Virginia. (Brenda, if you are
from lines mentioned in Ella's book, most likely
you can join the rest of us in searching for the
link between George and William.)
William, Jr. and Joshua have also been listed as
possible sons of William Calvert. That is all I
know about these two.
Richard is a known and proven son of William
Calvert. He never married and there is nothing to
suggest he had children out of wedlock.
The Leonard line of course continued through
his daughter and granddaughters. Whether or not
we who descend from George Calvert of Stafford
County also descend from Leonard remains a
question.
