Hi Group,
I recently checked my city's old city directories from 1850-1900, to find my
g-g-g-grandfather and g-g-grandfather, and I found even in those mistakes
were made concerning names. If it were not for other information that I all
ready had I would never have found them. This was helpful in letting me know
that not only in the census records but also marriage records, etc., that
their names can be spelled differently, even nicknames used.
My g-g-g-grandfather's first name was "Etheldred" (not a Calvert). Here are
examples of how the directories had his name spelled (goofed up) through the
years: "Etheldred, Ethelred, Ethelrin, Dread, Dred, Fred, Red." So on trying
these different spellings I found g-g-g-granddads marriage record.
Just thought I would share this with others especially those just beginning
their genealogy search.
