Whoa folks! Unless Vicki sent you an email OFF the list, you won't be
affected by her virus... Rootsweb does not allow HTML formatted email or
attachments, and thus cannot pass on this virus... SO, please don't panic
about this virus. It is, as always, a good idea to have an updated
anti-virus program running on your computer and to scan your computer
regularly (I update my software weekly and also scan weekly) If you don't
have anti-virus software, you can download a shareware version of Norton's
Anti-virus by going to
http://www.symantec.com/nav/indexA.html and choosing
your operating system and then "Try before you buy". You WILL need to
purchase this software after 30 days (I think) in order to keep using it,
but you DO need an anti-virus program if you are using the internet. Now,
since virus' cannot be passed on through Rootsweb, this discussion is indeed
off topic, but since it has been brought up, and since I have been dealing
with it at length on non-Rootsweb lists I am on, let me pass this
information on to you... This virus affects ONLY Microsoft Outlook and
Outlook Express users... To check for this virus (this info is for PC's
only... can't help you Mac users, sorry!):
You need to do a search on your hard drive for KAK.HTA To do this, go to
start, then find, then files or folders. In the new window, in the "named"
section, type KAK.HTA and then under "Look In" choose My Computer from the
drop down list. Check the "include subfolders" box. Then hit "Find
Now".
It should find that file if you are infected. If it does, you need to
download the latest data files for your virus software and then run them.
If you're running Norton, the files are at
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html but you should have an
"update" button in the program itself. For other software, I'm not sure
where they would be, but if you email me (personally, not the list!) with
the brand of software I'm sure I can find it quickly. Then, after you've
downloaded and installed the update, run the software and it should detect
and remove the worm. After that, you'll need to download and install the
windows updates for your software by going to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and choosing "Product Updates". Download
anything in the "critical updates" area. That should include a patch to fix
"malicious code" and such. Let me know if you need more help.
Now, please let's take this off list and if you need more help, I am always
available... Thanks so much!
