Any personal coat of arms (including the crest, which sits on top of the
helmet or crown) devolves only to the descendants of the original recipient
of the Grant of Arms and in accordance with the Grant of Arms. You would
need to refer to the original Grant of Arms to discover whether a coat of
arms passed to only male descendants in the male line, all male descendants
or (very rarely) to all descendants male and female. This is a costly
exercise, involving a thoroughly researched family tree and an application to
the <A HREF="www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/ ">College of Arms</A>. In
the event
that you could prove a direct line descent to the original Grantee, it still
would not necessarily entitle you to use the arms.
Those who sell coats of arms (unless they are connected with the College of
Arms) are usually very careful to say that a particular coat of arms is one
'associated with the name' because of the necessity to prove an entitlement
before one can legitimately use a coat of arms.

George.
