Hi Vicki,
I am not, as far as I know, related to your line of Calverts though
this is not proven. I say this with the following considerations.
When I started the research on my ancestry, I began with the work of
my Mother and her cousins etc. That stood for quite a number of years
at proven and documented Albert Gallatin Calvert b 1830 who married Mary A Polly Cain. We
knew from history books that his father was Thomas and his grandfather was Thomas. We knew
the wife of Thomas Jr and some of the children.
From this work of Dorthey Calvert, Barbara Joseph, Sarah "Sadie" Taylor, Helen
McCullough and many many more relations researched these Calverts of WV(38 family groups
and approximately 400 individuals of Calvert and adjacent families I have now documented
with primary and secondary documentation both Thomas Clare Calvert Jr and Sr, their
spouses and Children and followed each line down into the 20th century(for the most part),
found their origins in Western Virginia and PA at least as far as where the oldest proven
lived...Isaac Calvert.
I have documented, primary and secondary, the father of Thomas Sr, his wife and
issue(except for probable but unproven children--likely two females born between
1780-1791)--Isaac Calvert b c 1747 who married Faney Bulet(sic) and may have married prior
to Faney depending on the origin and family of Isaac.
As so many Calvert Researchers looking at origins and Calvert families, and since Isaac
lived in Greene County PA, I examined with a great deal of emphasis the families of
Calverts who migrated from Ireland. I did not believe this to be the correct ancestry but
couldn't eliminate it either. One of my associated family researchers has and
continues to investigate this.
I myself do not believe this is correct in that so much of the family history passed down
through the various descents from Isaac all tell the same story about origins: Maryland,
and England. This is brought to focus by 3 anecdotal references which are contributatory
to my own research: The Harlan family of Wetzel County WV has written in the history of
Wetzel County WV that the ancestors of these Calverts was English. Wiley Lemasters, an
adjacent family(my great grandmother was Martha Lemasters b 1855), researched his own
family line and has written to various family members that the Calverts of Wetzel were
neighbors and fellow migrating families from Maryland. Wiley contributed greatly to the
research of the Genealogy work: Lemasters USA pub 2nd edition 1965. His research did quite
a lot to document the family origins to Richard Lemasters and his sons in Maryland and the
various properties in Queen Anne's County, Later Frederick and others...these were
near the property bt!
w, known as Calvert's hope. Third, John D Calvert, b 1804, elder brother of Thomas
Clare Calvert Jr. was interviewed by a Waynesburg PA newspaper in 1881 and in this article
he stated that the family was from Bucks and Lancaster, England(no more specificity than
this).
After having found Isaac and Faney I found other older family research by John Conklin,
Alvah Headlee and Dorothy Hennen which traced the family as well as they could at the
time. This is where some of the pattern of research attends to John Calvert, B 1692 and
puts me squarely in looking at the brother of your George b 1694, further complicating the
issue by bringing into focus the Alias Harrisons of John Calvert's descent.
As I noted, I am unable to prove who the father of Isaac Calvert was. It is very possible
that my family line is of one of John Calvert's children. I have researched this and
looked at records available for more than a year with no clearer idea that this is true or
not true.
The Calvert DNA group that is ongoing and for which I am a facilitator has several family
blood lines in the offing including those related to Harris and Harrisons. I am hopeful to
prove or disprove any connection with John and George Calvert 1692 and 94. It was my
understanding that Reuben of George was now well established as was his tie to George
Calvert b 1668 who married 3 times but wife Elizabeth Doyne being the principle spouse and
matriarch of the family and that Secondary proof of George to Leonard was present but not
primary proof...I do have a
fellow Calvert researcher who will be able to illuminate this further in her own research
as her Calvert ancestry comes from George 1694.
If you wish to look at my various speculative ventures as to the various family
ancestry's you can find these by searching
Genealogy.com Calvert or Melungeon
lists...but they are only speculations, unproven and relate to a potential related family
line to yours.
As others have responded to your query, I think it is imperative to obtain the DNA of your
father or his brother or one of their male descent, for the reasons given and for the
benefit of other Calvert researhers looking for their origins. The more of us that obtain
this data, the more we can prove associations and lineage and potentially tie known
Calverts with unknown origins.
Feel free to contact me at any time. I will be happy to share anything that I have
acquired that may assist you in any way.
...Regards, dai
