Jim,
You can create a Durable Power of Attorney which can specifically
address people as well as a living will. I have a copy of my own.
It is simple. I think you should check version which are used in the
state in which you reside. If you have done extensive work, I would
create a specific will which addresses genealogy and how to ensure
information is saved and passed on to responsible parties. So much
has been lost in various situations that is unretrieveable. In my family case, the
documents, photos etc of 3 generations of Calverts
went up in a bonfire outside a log cabin--two sisters ridding the
family of rubbish. the brother saved a painting which happened to be of my 3rd great
Grandfather and his wife. The rest was gone already in
flames.
Another case is that same 3rd great grandfather, a WV state legislator and one of the
participants in the formation of the state and the writing of the state constitution, had
all of his papers and books burned after his death.
The third case is what was known in my branch of the Calvert family as the Calvert Roll.
It contained all the families and children, dates of birth, locations etc all the way back
apparently to the early 1700s or mid 1600s. IT is lost in America. My mother and
grandmother pulled this document from my grandfather's trunk in Oklahoma in the early
1930s. My Grandfather Arthur gave it to his youngest brother to keep. It then passed to a
son and from that son, when he died to a daughter. I do not know her married name, the
state she lives in etc. Also among this material is my Great Grandfather's pocket
watch and probably more if it still exists.
By all means, do a genealogy will to handle the materials etc so they are preserved. By
all means also do a durable power of attorney. You can address with specificity items to
be handled.
I am not an attorney but go on this via experience from my parents and others.
Regards, Dai

Vicki,
There are several reasons for having your Dad or his brother take the
test. It will enable them to compare samples with other families of the
same name to see if there is a probability of relationship. In many cases
with the Calvert families, we will probably never know for certain exactly
how the lineage may run. The scams of the late 1800s and early 1900s in
America seem to have obscured records and put in their place false linages.
The probability of relationship with others who have taken the test will
assist you in looking in the right places for records. In addition, where
you now hesitate to connect to a probable lineage, you will either be able
to either rule the lineage out or connect to it with a higher probability
of certainty.
As all of us have discussed many times, there are a number of apparently
unrelated Calvert families who emigrated to America, Australia and other
places in the world. If a number of us take these tests, we may be able to
connect them. But, there is no certainty that this will be the case.
I have a question for Beth and David; Can we provide a power of attorney
to our spouses, children, or other relatives to where they would have
access to our records? A couple of us are getting on and do not want what
we have provided to be lost when we are gone. And, could Vicki get power
of attorney from her father to act as his agent in receiving the test
results if he is not interested himself?

I think I have asked this before but I will do it again. Is there not
anyone
on this list who connects with my Calvert line? My father and his brother
are living but both are in their 80's. Should I get a kit and hang on to it
and if I do, why would I? This probably doesn't make any since to anyone but
me. Thanks, Vicki
