DEATH OF VETERAN; Wild Bill Calvert Answers The Final Roll Call. Confederate
Veteran William Calvert, known far and near as Wild Bill Calvert answered
the final roll call yesterday morning at 2:30 o'clock at the home of T.
H. Carter north of town. For several years Wild Bill - and he gloried in
the nickname - had resided at the Confederate Veterans Home at Pewee Valley
(KY)...about six weeks ago he came to Caldwell County on a visit to his
numerous relatives in the county. He attended the reunion of the old soldiers
at Little Rock and returned worn out from the trip and with a disordered
stomach. The remains were interred Monday afternoon, at the Freewill burial
grounds. The desceased was seventy-seven years of age and is survived by
nine children. (There was a mistake in the obituary. William Mansfield
"Wild Bill" Calvert was not buried in Freewill, as stated. He was buried
in the little Calvert Cemetery on his farm where his son Charlie was buried.
Other family members and friends have since also been buried there).
