George,
Is Hugh Mercer related to the Mercer family that is found in Pennsylvania?
Carolyn Joy found a notation on the LDS webs site,
familysearch.com, that
alleged John Calvert of Bald Eagle Township (in what is now Centre County
PA) was the son of a Reuben Calvert. The sons of John Calvert of Bald
Eagle Township later moved in the company of a Mercer family to Belmont
County, OH. The Mercers, according to some sources, later became very
active in the Methodist Church in Ohio. One may have been a Bishop in that
Church.

Carolyn,
Welcome to the family. Vicki Kay Spencer and I descend
from Thomas, the eldest son of Reuben and Sarah
Calvert. The information you show is generally accepted
as being correct, however there are all kinds of
uncertainties about Reuben Calvert, his parents and his
children. Its a great line of the family for someone who
likes being a detective. The connection to the Kirklands is
also unique aspect of this line.
There has been a documentary on the A&E channel
called "The Crossing". This is about Washington crossing
the Delaware and the American victory at Trenton. You
may want to watch the next time it is on.
Sergeant Reuben Calvert was a continental soldier with
the 3rd Virginia Regiment under the command of Colonel
Hugh Mercer (who was one of Washington's closest
friends). They fought at Harlem Heights, Trenton and
Princeton. Mercer was stabbed to death in a bayonet
charge by the British on Jan. 6th, 1777. Reuben Calvert
was marked as "Dead" on the company payroll from Jan.
1st to March 1st, 1777 with the time of service shown as
15 days. This has lead us to believe he died on Jan. 15th,
1777. The cause of his death is unknown, however he
was clearly one of the soldiers who remained with
Washington after their enlistments had expired.
There are many pages of information about Reuben's line
of the family. I have Martin shown as a son of Elijah, but nothing
on Martin's descendants. Looks like you have done some
original research. I will gladly send whatever you desire,
i.e something brief or the full text.
