Cathy,
Just to let you know, after having reset myself on what I had found on Cornelius descent
and Sarah, Laree and I exchanged further which is below. I will get back into my research
notes and see what else I found on thomas's Calvert. Here is the exchange that is
important to Religious affiliation....
Laree and I discussed your Thomas Calvert Yesterday. In one exchange she notes the
following...this in response to my email just prior to this ...but before I went and found
out that I had found Thomas of Cornelius whose daughter Sarah married a
Thoroughgood...Laree wrote:
David,
I think limiting yourself to the Quakers not the Catholics is not working...my Calverts in
the northern neck became Methodist...how did that happen, men married non Catholics and
converted and for awhile there you were better off converting to the Church of England so
more incentive if you ask me:) now my Calverts and Vincent Cooksey Sr., signed the Baptist
petition 1776 Pr Wm Va., but my Calverts were not Baptist so they were signing for their
neighbors who were Baptist, for their freedom of worship...so limiting yourself to
looking at either Methodist or Quaker...by this late a date 1823 for a Calvert, is not a
wise filter to apply.....this is just my opinion, we know we have Calverts that became
Dunkard Ministers, and they came out of the Northern Neck of Va., and travel through
Bedford Co.,Va., on their way to Ohio. (note here Cathy...the Dunkard Ministers are not my
family but there were several of my family lines that became ministers--all protestant.
I am not convinced yet, that we are only looking at Cornelius Calvert's line in early
SE and SW Virginia cause of that Nelson Calvert-tavern owner, we found...it seems to me
there is a hint that he migrated out of Maryland. Cornelius is in the right time period
and geographic area...but I think there is a mix of different Calverts, down there in
early southern virginia? just a hunch(Here, I agree as well...I have 3 Calverts who are
known not to be quakers in Chester--John, specifically written up in the Hollingsworth
text as being present, but not Quaker and apparently of the Maryland line of Calverts. I
have speculated that this might very well be the brother or uncle of my Isaac Calvert of
Somerset County MD). The other two are a John and Daniel Calvert who obtain license to run
a pub in Chester County in alternating years).
Ree responded to my note below....
...
I also noted that if my own suspected Genealogy is correct, my Calvert family is of the
Yorkshire Calverts but all the known ancestors are protestant. This would include
Alexander and apparently his father William Calvert Planter of court record, 1726 and 33
as Alexander married in Coventry Parish Church Somerset County, Protestant ...
thus some time prior if my suspect is correct the family left the Catholic Church after
Leonard and Charles timeframe...probably the latter.
If in your run of Calverts you have anything on a Sarah hanging loose you might be able to
help out. I found Sarah d.o of Thomas Son of Cornelius and I think Thomas retired from the
sea and went inland but I ceased tracking it...It may have been in VA and then to PA and
it seems I recall wondering if Thomas was in one of those Western VA counties and then
Bedford Co PA.
Another thought hinged on the Unknown John of Chester Co who may or may not be related to
Isaac. He is noted as being protestant in the book on the Quaker Calverts even though next
door to Hollingsworth and Calverts of Joshua and Thomas ETC. Moreover, there is record of
John and Daniel Calvert who run Pub's in Chester. It seems that I thought at one time
a Thomas was associated with these two but can't recall why.
If you have any thoughts on this let me know. Cathy's email is above.
